Quebec Kung Fu School Strikes Gold at Nationals, Sets Sights on Olympic Stage

CARIGNAN, QUEBEC – In a resounding display of skill and dedication, the Wu Shu Kwoon school of Carignan, Quebec, has returned from the Canadian Kung Fu Wushu Championships with an impressive haul of four gold medals. This breaking news story highlights not only the school’s success but also the growing momentum of Wushu – often referred to as Chinese Kung Fu – as it edges closer to full Olympic recognition. This victory is a major boost for the province of Quebec, which was represented by the only Quebec team in the Wushu Sanda competition.

Dominating Performance at the Markham Pan Am Centre

The championships, held August 2nd and 3rd at the Markham Pan Am Centre in Unionville, Ontario, saw athletes from across Canada and even Bermuda compete. Wu Shu Kwoon’s athletes shone brightly, securing victories in multiple categories. Sofiane Semane, the school’s star athlete, clinched gold in both the under 70 kg and under 75 kg divisions of Class A/B – the highest category in the discipline. Jin Ya Zhang triumphed in Class C, under 90 kg, while Nicolas Boyer secured gold in Class C, under 75 kg.

“An exceptional performance and a faultless course for the team – a great pride for Quebec and for Wu Shu Kwoon!” exclaimed Laurent Pierre, the instructor who accompanied the athletes. Pierre emphasized the team’s unwavering commitment and the significance of their achievement.

Wushu’s Olympic Journey: From Youth Games to Global Stage

This success comes at a pivotal moment for Wushu. The sport has recently been officially recognized by the Olympic Youth Games (YOG), scheduled to take place in Dakar, 2026. This inclusion is a significant step towards its potential inclusion in future Olympic Games. Semane, with his impressive track record, is now a strong contender to represent Canada at the YOG.

Semane’s journey is particularly compelling. Originally from Algeria, he’s a three-time Algerian champion (2022, 2023, and 2024) and a bronze medalist at the African Nations Championship. Adding the Canadian championship to his resume further solidifies his position as a rising star in the sport. His performance now qualifies him for the World Championship in Brazil this October, though funding remains a challenge.

Challenges and Growth in Quebec

Despite the national success, Wushu Sanda faces hurdles within Quebec. Currently, the discipline isn’t officially recognized for competition within the province, limiting opportunities for local athletes. Wu Shu Kwoon is one of only two Wushu clubs in Quebec, forcing athletes to travel to other provinces – Alberta, Ontario, and British Columbia – to participate in competitions.

“We often have to take the car to participate in competitions,” Pierre lamented, expressing hope that the provincial authorities will recognize the discipline and allow for local competitions to flourish. The school is actively working to change this, advocating for official recognition to foster the growth of Wushu within Quebec. This isn’t just about competition; it’s about providing opportunities for youth to engage in a physically and mentally challenging art form.

Kung Fu Training

Dedicated training is key to success in the demanding art of Kung Fu.

The Wu Shu Kwoon school’s triumph is a testament to the dedication of its athletes and instructor, and a powerful signal of Wushu’s growing presence in Canada. As the sport gains momentum towards Olympic inclusion, the story of this Quebec school serves as an inspiring example of perseverance, skill, and the pursuit of excellence. The team’s future endeavors, particularly Semane’s potential participation in the World Championship and the Olympic Youth Games, will undoubtedly be closely watched by the Canadian martial arts community and beyond.
