(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Cho Seung -han = As the seawater temperature, which cools the nuclear power plant due to rapid climate change, has risen, the 8th nuclear power plant may have to be suspended in 10 years.

Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co., Ltd., which has been increasing the operation limited sea water temperature using leisure, has decided to improve cooling performance by improving the facility.

At the 218th meeting on the 14th, the Nuclear Safety Committee received a report from KHNP from the KHNP on the status and future plans related to the rise in seawater temperature due to climate change.

The temperature of the nuclear power plant is controlled by coolant, and the seawater passing through the thermal bridge for cooling acts as a ‘source of final heat removal’.

In particular, when a nuclear accident occurs, the coolant temperature must be maintained at 43.33 degrees or less for the safety of the containment building with the reactor.

The design seawater temperature is 31 ~ 36.1 degrees depending on the nuclear power plant, and the problem of climate change is rapidly realizing, such as the highest seawater temperature in all nuclear power plants except Shinhanul 1 and 2 last year.

In particular, Sinwolseong Unit 1 and 2, which has a design seawater temperature of 31.5 degrees, has only 6 years left in considering the recent increase in water temperature as the seawater temperature is close to 31 degrees last year.

The Hanbit 1-6, located in the West Sea, is only 7 to 10 years away considering that the water temperature increase rate of the West Sea is higher.

KHNP has increased its limitations six times since 2001 by maintaining cooling facilities and utilizing the extra -affected range, but in the future, it has decided to secure the cooling performance by improving or replacing the cooling facilities in the future.

Sinwolseong Unit 1 and 2 plans to increase the number of heating plates in the heat exchanger to increase the cooling performance and apply for a change of operation this month in a direction to raise the water temperature by 1.37 degrees.

Hanbit 1-6 also decided to increase the design seawater temperature by improving the heat exchanger facility by 2029.

In addition, KHNP decided to evaluate nuclear power plants every year and establish a seawater temperature forecast system based on the research data of seawater temperature and temperature rate rates.

In addition, a dedicated team was formed and a procedure was made with specific measures from facilities inspection to suspension by seawater temperature.

Chairman Choi Won -ho said, “We plan to make sure that the facilities can be quickly solved in preparation for accelerated global warming, and make sure that the facilities can be responded immediately if the high sea water temperature is observed.”
