Celebrating 60 Years: The Legendary Delivery Model Tops Global Sales Since Its Inception

The commercial car segment may not be as dazzling as the passenger car segment, but these machines are absolutely essential for society. This is doubly true for light commercial vehicles, especially supplies that hold countless roles in our daily lives.

This summer, Ford commemorates sixty years since the start of production of the Transit model, whose first pieces left the production line of the Langley race (where during World War II was mounted by Hawker Hurricane) exactly 9th August 1965.

Transit was not the first European deliveries. Since 1953, Ford has produced a van in its German Cologne plant with Ford Taunus, which since 1961 received the name Taunus Transit. Its production stopped in 1965.

The first generation of Ford Transit has become even produced for the longest – since 1965 it lasted on the market until 1977 with only one smaller facelift in 1971.

Under the hood it hid various engines, from a 1.3 -liter four -cylinder fork to 3.0 liter V6 engine and a 3.3 -liter six -cylinder in -line in Australia. There were also a four -cylinder in -line in -line.

The first generation of Ford Transit offered enormous variability. “Every merchant, supplier, ambulance driver, builder, baker, candlestick manufacturer or holidaymaker will find what he needs in Ford Transit,” said Ford’s original press release of 1965.

Ford Transit has introduced itself in a number of versions over the past 60 years.

The original Ford Transit has found employment with a wide range of professions, but it has also become popular with thieves. Thanks to its inconspicuous appearance, availability, spaciousness, performance and good maneuverability, it was often used for banking robbery in the UK during the 60s and 70 years.

In addition, quality driving characteristics have also become the basis for the development of the extreme version of Ford Supervan, first introduced in 1971, which received the V8 engine.

In addition, the rapidly growing popularity of the car has led to the expansion of production abroad not only in the UK but also of Europe.
