Apple’s Next Event: iPhones, Watches, and More

Apple has officially announced its next product event where it will announce the new iPhone 17 lineup alongside new Apple Watch hardware. The event will take place on Tuesday, September 9. The tagline for the event reads “Awe dropping” and features an infrared view of the Apple logo.

What to expect

Apple will announce four new iPhones, including an ultra thin model.

iPhone 17
iPhone 17 Air
iPhone 17 Pro
iPhone 17 Pro Max

The iPhone 17 is expected to mostly be an internal update to the iPhone 16 design introduced last year. Meanwhile, the iPhone 17 Air will be Apple’s new ultra thin design with a display slightly smaller than the iPhone 16 Plus that it replaces in the lineup. Like the iPhone mini before it, the iPhone Plus is expected to retire after a few short years.

iPhone 17 Pro and pro Max will share similar specs, aside from the display size, and thickness could actually increase this year, especially in the Max size possibly in service of greater battery life. Both Pro models and also the Air model should feature a redesigned camera system that spans across the width of the back glass instead of a round box positioned on the top left. Apple is also expected to sell iPhone 17 Pro for a higher price with fewer storage options. We’ll also likely see the iPhone 15, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max be discontinued following the event.

We also expect to see two updated Apple Watch models:

Apple Watch Series 11
Apple Watch Ultra 3

Apple may also announce AirPods Pro 3 after a few years of revving AirPods Pro 2. At last year’s iPhone event, Apple introduced AirPods 4 and AirPods 4 with active Noise Cancelation so that hardware is still relatively new.

Meanwhile, Apple may introduce a new premium case option called TechWoven. This technical fabric option is the next successor to leather, following the failed FineWoven fiasco from two years ago.

The name “Liquid Silicone” has been tossed around for Apple’s standard silicone cases. We’ll see if that sticks.

What specific advancements in chip architecture contribute to the iPhone 17’s improved battery life?

Enhanced Charging Capabilities & Power Management

Recent advancements in iPhone charging technology are directly influencing the iPhone 17. While the iPhone 16 series saw a boost to 45W theoretical charging, with sustained rates around 33W and peaks nearing 39W (as evidenced by iPhone 16 Pro Max testing – [https://www.zhihu.com/question/667141764]), the iPhone 17 is expected to push these boundaries further.

faster Wired Charging: Rumors suggest Apple is targeting a consistent 45W charging rate for the iPhone 17, significantly reducing charge times.

Optimized Wireless Charging: Expect improvements to MagSafe, potentially exceeding 20W for faster wireless charging speeds.

Smart Charging Algorithms: iOS 18, debuting with the iPhone 17, will likely incorporate more sophisticated algorithms to optimize charging based on usage patterns and battery health, extending the overall lifespan of the iPhone battery.

USB-C Evolution: the iPhone 17 will continue to utilize USB-C, with potential upgrades to USB 4 for even faster data transfer and charging capabilities.Consider investing in a high-quality USB-C charger capable of delivering at least 45W to fully leverage the new charging speeds.

A18 Bionic Chip: Performance and Efficiency

The heart of the iPhone 17 will be the A18 Bionic chip. This new silicon is anticipated to deliver:

  1. Increased CPU Performance: Expect a 15-20% performance boost compared to the A17 Pro, enabling smoother multitasking and faster app loading times.
  2. Enhanced GPU Capabilities: Gaming on the iPhone 17 will be a revelation, with improved graphics rendering and support for advanced features like ray tracing. This is crucial for demanding mobile gaming experiences.
  3. Neural Engine Advancements: The A18’s Neural Engine will be significantly more powerful, accelerating machine learning tasks for features like computational photography,Siri, and augmented reality.
  4. Power Efficiency: Despite the performance gains, Apple is prioritizing power efficiency, aiming to maintain or even improve battery life. This is achieved through a refined chip architecture and optimized power management.

Display Innovations: Beyond ProMotion

The iPhone 17 display is poised for meaningful upgrades:

Ultra-Narrow Bezels: Apple is reportedly working on reducing the bezels around the display even further, maximizing screen real estate.

Micro-Lens Array (MLA) Technology: This technology promises brighter displays with improved viewing angles and reduced power consumption.

Dynamic Refresh rate Improvements: Building on ProMotion technology (adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz), the iPhone 17 may introduce even more granular refresh rate control, optimizing for both smoothness and battery life.

Enhanced Outdoor Visibility: Expect improvements to peak brightness and anti-reflective coatings for better visibility in direct sunlight. This is notably important for users who frequently use their iPhone outdoors.

Camera System: Computational Photography Reimagined

The iPhone 17 camera system will continue to be a focal point of innovation:

New Sensor Technology: Rumors point to a new stacked sensor design for the main camera, capturing more light and improving low-light performance.

Periscope Zoom Lens Enhancements: The telephoto lens will likely see further improvements, offering increased optical zoom range and enhanced image stabilization.

Advanced Computational Photography: iOS 18 will introduce new computational photography features, leveraging the A18 Bionic’s Neural Engine to deliver stunning image quality. Expect improvements to features like Night mode, Portrait mode, and Smart HDR.

Spatial Video Capabilities: Building on the iPhone 15 Pro’s spatial video recording, the iPhone 17 may offer higher resolution and improved editing capabilities.

iOS 18: A Smarter, More Personalized Experience

iOS 18, designed specifically for the iPhone 17, will introduce a host of new features
