Togo’s Education Revolution: Enrollment Soars, But Community Support Remains Crucial

Lomé, Togo – August 30, 2025 – A remarkable surge in school enrollment is sweeping across Togo, with rates now exceeding 100% in primary education. This positive trend, fueled by the nation’s commitment to free and compulsory education, is being bolstered by a powerful wave of civic solidarity as organizations step in to address remaining inequalities and ensure every child has the tools to succeed. This is a developing story, optimized for Google News and SEO to deliver the latest updates quickly.

From Straw Huts to Classrooms: Togo’s Education Journey

For years, Togo has been steadily investing in its future through education. In 2008, the country introduced free pre-school and primary education, a move that began to unlock opportunities for countless children. More recently, secondary education also became tuition-free starting in the 2021-2022 school year, a policy slated to continue through 2025-2026. These reforms have demonstrably increased access, with the gross primary school enrollment rate climbing to 116.70% in 2024, up from 111.70% in 2023, and forecasts predicting 116.20% for 2025. The primary school completion rate is also on the rise, jumping from 88.80% to 94.60% between 2023 and 2024, with ambitious government targets for further improvement.

The Kit That Makes a Difference: Civil Society Steps Up

Despite the progress, the financial burden of back-to-school supplies remains a significant hurdle for many Togolese families. This is where the true spirit of community shines. Across the country, citizens are organizing and contributing to initiatives that provide essential school kits – notebooks, pens, pencils, and bags – to vulnerable children. Organizations like the Togolese League for Child Protection (LTPE) are leading the charge.

On August 29, 2025, LTPE distributed school kits to over 5,000 children across 12 villages in the Loved prefecture of the Region trays, approximately 140 kilometers from Lomé. Their initiative, “Education for all: 1 student, 1 kit, 1 life choice,” aims to prevent school dropouts caused by financial hardship, teenage pregnancies, and other challenges. “By this action, we want to avoid dropping out of school,” explained LTPE coordinator Nina Afi Kazoulé to Togolese media outlet Plume of Africa. “We know that dropping out of school can happen due to the parents’ lack of financial resources, pregnancies among school girls, or any inappropriate student behavior.”

Other groups, such as the Togovi Bé Smile association and Action for Peace and Good Governance (APGG), are also making a tangible difference. In the village of Zooti N’titikope, they recently provided kits to over 300 children and are offering support to young girls to help them successfully return to school. The First Steps for Childhood (3PE) association in Lomé focuses on ensuring equal access to education by covering school fees and providing supplies.

Challenges Remain: Infrastructure and Teacher Training

While the dedication of civil society is commendable, systemic challenges persist. Many schools, particularly in rural areas, lack adequate infrastructure. Students often study in dilapidated buildings, sometimes even straw huts, with limited seating. A 2021 plan to construct 30,000 new classrooms has been scaled back to 14,632 by September 2024, highlighting the ongoing need for investment. Furthermore, ensuring a sufficient number of qualified teachers remains a priority.

Togo’s recent increase in the guaranteed monthly minimum wage (SMIG) to FCFA 52,500 (USD 95) is a step towards improving economic conditions, but many Togolese citizens feel it doesn’t adequately address the cost of living. This underscores the importance of continued support for families and the vital role played by organizations providing school supplies.

Togo’s story is a powerful example of how a commitment to free education, combined with the unwavering support of its citizens, can create a brighter future for its children. The nation’s progress serves as an inspiration for other African countries striving to expand access to quality education.
