From all these views, a challenge arises for other groups. Yapwriter! Both from light article writers, scientific journal writers, to writers caption uploads on Instagram, almost always get slander. This slander did not appear without reason, but was present because of a product made by “Dik AI” which is becoming more and more common day by day. “The more you come here, the more you can feel which articles use ChatGPT.

The defense did not come from just one side, user X with the username @sh*****na wrote a defense tweet that read, “Except for the second point, actually what is mentioned in the characteristics is quite annoying. Because those are points that could be considered neat writing, imo (ed: in my opinion). Especially the use of the em dash.” This defense emphasizes that not everything stated in the first tweet is valid, because these points show the characteristics of neat writing. But it could be said that the second point—part “Emojis as bullet points”—is guaranteed.

Indeed em dash what’s wrong?

Dash (em dash) can easily be found in novels, literary works, scientific articles, poetry, even quotes famous figures who are easily displayed by social media accounts.

In writing, punctuation marks in the form of horizontal lines can be called dash. There are three types dashesthat is hyphen, in dashAnd em dash. Each dash have their respective duties and roles. Based on explanations obtained from two sources, namely The Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS) and Enhanced Spelling edition V (EYD V), as follows:

  1. Hyphen/ Hyphen (-)
As the name suggests, these punctuation marks are used to connect elements that are related, repeated, related, or can also connect two different elements. Usage examples: husband and wife; children; two-thirds; S-1.
  2. In Dash (–)
In EYD V, this punctuation is not explained explicitly. However, The Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS) provide an explanation that punctuation marks in dash used to unite elements linked by distance. Examples of use: September–October; 1948–1888.
  3. Em Dash/ Dash (—)
Nahthis punctuation mark which is currently hotly debated has many functions, starting from replacing commas (,), replacing colons (:), replacing semicolons (;), even replacing brackets (()). This dash has the function of enclosing additional information, or interruptions, such as: “Success—we agree—can be achieved if we are willing to try hard.”; And “The Indonesian Language Prioritization Movement—the mandate of the Youth Pledge—must continue to be encouraged”. However, it is different from CMOS. Din addition to functioning as a substitute for several punctuation marks and as a ‘clamp’ of additional information or interruption, in EYD V, this punctuation mark also functions as in dash which is explained by CMOS. Example: Jakarta—Dony; September—October.

Suggestions for all parties

After understanding the function, when it appears, and the role em dashit can be concluded that the number of hours spent reading has an influence on the judgment of a piece of writing.

“That one AI” not present to be avoided, but present as friends, colleagues, and even critical colleagues. So don’t avoid it, but use it in moderation.
