Suntory’s Bold Bet on Hydrogen: From Whisky Distilling to a New Energy Future

The global push for decarbonization is gaining momentum, but it’s often the unexpected players leading the charge. Consider Suntory, the iconic beverage company, which is now pioneering a large-scale green hydrogen project in Japan. This isn’t just about reducing their carbon footprint; it’s a strategic move that could redefine how we think about energy, water, and the future of sustainable manufacturing – and it’s starting with their whisky.

The Yamanashi Model: A Locally-Sourced Hydrogen Economy

On October 11th, Suntory, alongside nine other companies and Yamanashi Prefecture, launched a demonstration experiment at the Green Hydrogen Park – Hakushu. This project centers around a power-to-gas (P2G) system, converting renewable electricity into green hydrogen. The system has already begun supplying hydrogen to Suntory’s Minami Alps Hakushu Water Plant, with plans to extend its use to the nearby Suntory Hakushu Distillery. With a potential annual production capacity of 2,200 tons, the initiative could slash carbon dioxide emissions by 16,000 tons annually.

This isn’t a standalone effort. It’s deeply rooted in Japan’s 2017 Basic Hydrogen Strategy, which identified hydrogen as a cornerstone of a decarbonized society. Suntory’s approach, however, goes beyond simply adopting the strategy. They’re actively building a localized hydrogen supply chain, leveraging Yamanashi Prefecture’s abundant renewable resources – hydroelectric power and solar energy – and its commitment to sustainable practices.

Collaboration is Key: A Multi-Industry Approach

Suntory isn’t tackling this challenge alone. The success of the Yamanashi Model P2G System relies on a collaborative network of companies. For example, Toray, a leading fiber manufacturer, provides the crucial polymer membranes necessary for hydrogen generation. This highlights a critical point: building a hydrogen economy requires expertise from diverse sectors.

Equally important is the strong partnership with Yamanashi Prefecture. “They also established a hydrogen strategy early on. The local leadership was exceptionally strong,” explains Masaaki Fujiwara, Suntory’s chief sustainability officer. This collaborative spirit, built on mutual trust and shared goals, is a key enabler of the project’s progress.

Beyond Decarbonization: Suntory’s Green Hydrogen Vision

Suntory’s ambitions extend far beyond meeting its 2050 net-zero emissions target. The company’s Suntory Green Hydrogen Vision, announced in June, frames hydrogen as integral to their core philosophy: “Sustained by Nature and Water.” This connection is deliberate. Fujiwara emphasizes that hydrogen, born from water and returning to it, perfectly aligns with Suntory’s commitment to environmental stewardship.

Phase 1 of the vision focuses on utilizing green hydrogen as a heat source for sterilizing beverages at the Hakushu Water Plant and, notably, for direct-fired distillation at the Hakushu Distillery. This application is particularly significant, offering a pathway to decarbonize the production of a globally renowned spirit. The system aims for a “completely locally produced energy for local consumption,” utilizing groundwater from Suntory’s Natural Water Sanctuaries and renewable energy generated within the prefecture.

Optimizing Renewable Energy with Hydrogen

The integration of hydrogen production with renewable energy sources isn’t just about reducing emissions; it’s about maximizing efficiency. Solar power generation often experiences surpluses due to fluctuating demand. Fujiwara points out that utilizing this excess energy to power the hydrogen plant increases the overall effectiveness of renewable energy deployment. This synergy is crucial for building a resilient and sustainable energy system.

Scaling Up: From Demonstration to Commercialization

The current demonstration project is vital for gathering data on the profitability and appropriate pricing of the produced hydrogen. Starting in 2027, Phase 2 envisions a fully integrated value chain – from production to sales – expanding beyond the two initial plants. Potential markets include Yamanashi Prefecture and the greater Tokyo metropolitan area.

Suntory is also exploring broader applications within its own operations, including hydrogen-powered mobility solutions for long-distance transport, on-site vehicles, and forklifts. Collaboration with the Central Japan Hydrogen and Ammonia Association will facilitate the rollout of this technology to other distilleries, such as Suntory Chita in Aichi Prefecture and Suntory Takasago in Hyogo Prefecture.

The Untapped Potential of Hydrogen: Beyond Energy

Suntory’s vision extends beyond traditional energy applications. Fujiwara highlights hydrogen’s unique properties, such as its high antioxidant capacity, suggesting potential for new product development. He also explores the possibilities of using hydrogen in cooking, noting its higher combustion temperatures and ability to retain moisture in ingredients. This innovative thinking underscores the potential for hydrogen to unlock new markets and drive demand.

To realize this potential, Suntory recognizes the need for wider collaboration and market development. As an outsider to the conventional energy industry, the company believes its close connection with consumers gives it a unique advantage in communicating the benefits of hydrogen and raising public awareness.
