A new report from Anthropic details how the state-sponsored group, known as GTG-1002, successfully used its Claude Code AI model to orchestrate and execute portions of a sophisticated espionage campaign. This isn’t a hypothetical future threat; it’s happening now, and represents a significant leap in the autonomization of cyberattacks.

The Rise of Agentic AI in Cyber Warfare

While AI has been used in cybersecurity for years – primarily for defense – this incident marks the first documented case of AI-powered espionage successfully breaching high-value targets for intelligence collection. Anthropic’s researchers found that GTG-1002 didn’t simply use Claude as a tool; they built a framework where the AI acted as a series of “sub-agents,” each tasked with specific components of the attack chain.
