Verstappen “Quite Surprised” to Still Be in Title Contention Heading into Final Race

abu Dhabi, UAE – December 4, 2025Red Bull racing’s Max Verstappen has expressed astonishment at remaining in championship contention heading into the final race of the Formula 1 season. Despite a challenging start and periods where the team lacked outright pace, Verstappen finds himself within striking distance of the title.

“normally, when you’re that far down, there’s no real indication you can turn things around, or even significantly close the gap,” Verstappen stated. “But we did, and that’s something we’re incredibly proud of. It’s exciting for everyone that the championship fight isn’t solely between the two drivers of one team – having another team involved always makes it better.”

While acknowledging the possibility of securing the championship,Verstappen doesn’t believe this season will be his most rewarding. He reserves that honor for his dominant 2023 campaign, where he secured a record-breaking 19 wins out of 22 races.

“This has been a really good season, arguably my best, but it’s also been frustrating at times due to our lack of speed,” he admitted. “However, I’ve been happy with what I’ve achieved, consistently pushing the limits and extracting results that weren’t always realistic.”

Verstappen attributes his continued success to a relentless pursuit of betterment, both on and off the track. “You always try to become a more well-rounded driver,” he explained. “I focus on the details, learning about the car, learning about myself, and engaging in activities outside of Formula 1.”

He highlighted the benefits of diversifying his racing experience, recently achieving a notable victory in his debut race at the Nürburgring in a GT3 car. “Driving a lot of different cars, I don’t think it hurts you when you return to F1. It’s about striving to become a more complete driver.”
