Breaking: SoCal launches a new women’s pro flag football league spanning eight counties
On Tuesday, a women’s flag football league introduced its first eight-county footprint, with franchises planned in San Diego, Imperial, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, Ventura, Santa Barbara and san Bernardino.
The So Cal Women’s Pro Flag Football League (SCWPFFL) is led by sports entrepreneur Roy Englebrecht, who says the move taps into an unprecedented rise in popularity for women’s flag football nationwide.
organizers outline a 14-game regular season running from June through mid-August, followed by playoffs in August. Games will be structured as four 15-minute quarters, and a league-wide draft is scheduled for mid-March.
Venue plans call for matches to be held at top high schools or junior college stadiums across the eight counties.
Englebrecht underscored the moment, saying the sport has “reached a tipping point” with extraordinary talent and genuine interest. He noted Southern California’s history of sports innovation and described the league as a professional home for players to continue careers in flag football.
He added that a full-time commissioner would be hired in January to oversee league formation, enabling him to focus on other ventures, including a forthcoming Combat Sports entertainment IPO and the launch of two other sports properties.
Englebrecht also highlighted opportunities for investors to own stakes in teams, comparing the experience to the pathways taken by prominent franchise figures in major leagues.
League organizers emphasize that women’s flag football is among the fastest-growing sports in the United States, receiving sanctioning from numerous state high school associations and support from the NFL at the grassroots level. The sport is slated to be part of the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Further announcements—covering team names, venues, the league draft, player tryouts, ownership groups and corporate partnerships—are planned for early February.
