The upcoming 2026 Rivian R2, starting around $47,000, is Rivian’s answer, and early indications suggest it could be a game-changer.

Beyond the Model Y: Targeting a New Breed of EV Buyer

Tesla’s Model Y has develop into the default choice for many entering the EV space. But Rivian isn’t aiming to directly compete on the same terms. Instead, the R2 is designed to attract buyers currently in traditional gas-powered SUVs like the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Toyota 4Runner, as well as existing EV owners craving more off-road prowess. The interior shares many similarities with the R1S, featuring a minimalist dashboard, a horizontal driver display, and a large central infotainment screen. However, the R2 introduces the innovative Haptic Halo Wheels on the steering wheel, offering a unique and intuitive way to control various vehicle functions. The spacious cabin provides ample headroom and legroom for both front and rear passengers, and the rear seats fold flat to create a generous cargo area – even offering the option of a tailored mattress for overnight adventures.
