Côte-Nord: break-in period for the new Black Pearl factory in Port-Cartier

Black Pearl Factory in Port-Cartier Begins Production, Revolutionizing Mining Operations

Port-Cartier, Quebec – A new era in Canadian mining support has begun. Black Pearl, a state-of-the-art facility combining forging and foundry techniques, has commenced production of essential grinding balls in Port-Cartier, Quebec. This marks a significant development for the region and the mining industry as a whole, promising a reliable domestic supply of a critical component.

“Pearls of the North Shore” Ready for Deployment

The factory, which began operations last November, is currently focused on producing one-inch diameter metal balls – affectionately dubbed “pearls of the North Shore” by co-director Geoffrey Le Roy. These aren’t decorative gems, but; they are the workhorses of mineral processing, used by mining companies to pulverize ore into fine particles, enabling the extraction of valuable resources. The first castings were prepared last Friday, signaling a major milestone for the project.

A Cutting-Edge Manufacturing Process

Black Pearl’s process begins with melting recycled metal and alloys in induction furnaces. This molten metal is then poured into continuously manufactured sand molds, creating the robust grinding balls. Étienne Gagnon, one of the project’s architects, expressed satisfaction with the initial weeks of operation, stating, “We are in the process of setting up production. We have now integrated 80% of the grinding manufacturing line. Every week, we strive to stay the course to be able to do several metal castings per week.”

Serving Quebec and Ontario’s Mining Needs

The factory is poised to supply mining companies across Quebec and Ontario. Customers are preparing to conduct tests – both in laboratories and within active industrial environments – to assess the performance of the Black Pearl-produced grinding balls. Deliveries of the first batch are anticipated by the end of March. Beyond the initial one-inch balls, Black Pearl is already planning for the future, with a second production line dedicated to forging larger, five-inch diameter grinding balls.

This new facility represents a strategic investment in Canada’s mining infrastructure, reducing reliance on foreign suppliers and bolstering domestic manufacturing capabilities. The innovative approach to metal processing and the commitment to recycled materials position Black Pearl as a leader in sustainable mining support. The impact of this facility will be felt throughout the industry, contributing to more efficient and environmentally responsible mineral extraction.
