Legionnaires’ Disease Alert: Norwegian Encore Guests Notified of Potential Exposure

Recent and current passengers aboard Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Encore are being notified of a potential health risk following two diagnosed cases of Legionnaires’ disease linked to a December 2025 sailing. The cruise line is proactively working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to investigate the situation and ensure the safety of passengers and crew. While the exact sailing date for the affected individuals remains undisclosed, Norwegian Cruise Line is taking precautionary measures, including comprehensive testing of the ship’s water systems.

Legionnaires’ disease, a severe form of pneumonia, is caused by Legionella bacteria. According to the CDC, symptoms include coughing, fever, headaches, and muscle aches. The cruise line emphasized that at this time, it is unknown whether the two individuals contracted the illness onboard the Norwegian Encore or from another source. The ship, which can accommodate 3,998 guests at double occupancy and a crew of 2,100, continues to operate its scheduled 7-night Caribbean sailings from Miami without interruption.

Investigation and Testing Underway

Norwegian Cruise Line initiated the investigation after learning of the two cases and immediately contacted the CDC. “In response to these cases, and as part of our routine health and safety measures, we are working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and conducting Legionella testing onboard to support their standard investigation procedures,” the cruise line stated in a notification to guests. Testing is focused on potential sources of the bacteria, including hot tubs, showers, and faucets throughout the ship. As of February 13, 2026, all onboard testing has reach back negative for the Legionella bacteria, but testing is ongoing and being closely monitored by the CDC, Cruise Hive reported.

The CDC confirms that Legionnaires’ disease is not spread from person to person, but through the inhalation of water droplets containing the bacteria. This differs from the spread of gastrointestinal illnesses like norovirus, which are highly contagious. The incubation period for Legionnaires’ disease can range from two to 14 days, or even longer, meaning exposure may have occurred before, during, or after the cruise.

Past Cruise Ship Incidents and Standard Protocol

Contacting recent passengers when cases of Legionnaires’ disease are identified is standard practice within the cruise industry. In January and May 2025, Royal Caribbean similarly notified guests who had sailed aboard Symphony of the Seas after individuals were diagnosed with the illness following separate voyages, according to Cruise Hive. These notifications do not necessarily indicate contamination onboard the ships, but rather reflect a commitment to transparency and proactive health measures.

Norwegian Cruise Line is urging any guests who have recently sailed on, or are currently sailing on, the Norwegian Encore to seek medical attention and undergo Legionella testing if they develop symptoms. The cruise line as well advises that individuals with underlying health conditions or weakened immune systems consider consulting with their healthcare provider before traveling. Guests with medical devices that use water, such as CPAP machines, are encouraged to use distilled water as a precaution.

The 169,116-gross-ton Norwegian Encore, a Breakaway Plus class ship, continues its scheduled sailings. Norwegian Cruise Line has not disclosed whether the two individuals diagnosed with Legionnaires’ disease were traveling together or on the same sailing. Yahoo News also reported on the situation, confirming the ongoing investigation.

As the investigation continues, Norwegian Cruise Line is committed to providing updates and ensuring the health and safety of its passengers and crew. The CDC will continue to monitor the situation and provide guidance as needed.
