Belo Horizonte Carnival 2024: 75% of Blocos Confirmed, Safety & Intolerance Concerns

Belo Horizonte’s vibrant Carnaval celebrations are facing some disruption, with approximately 25% of registered block parades canceled ahead of the official festivities. Of the 667 block parades initially registered, only 499 (75%) are confirmed to take to the streets, according to Colonel Amanda Cristina Miranda, commander of the 1st Operational Command of the Minas Gerais Military Fire Department (CBMMG). The cancellations stem from a variety of factors, including logistical challenges and failure to meet safety inspection requirements.

Despite the cancellations, the spirit of Carnaval remains strong. The city anticipates a significant turnout, with the expectation of over 200,000 people attending the opening bloco, “Então, Brilha!” which kicked off the official celebrations Saturday morning with a theme of “Technology of Delirium.” Authorities are working to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all, with a full deployment of the Fire Department throughout the Carnaval period, with personnel foregoing scheduled leave to support security efforts.

Saturday marked the first official day of Carnaval in Belo Horizonte, with 68 block parades scheduled across the city’s regions. However, 29 of those parades were ultimately canceled. Colonel Miranda emphasized that all 617 blocks planning multiple performances were contacted regarding safety measures, inspections, and logistical support. The focus remains on facilitating a secure environment for both participants and spectators.

Beyond the logistical hurdles of registered parades, the city is also addressing the issue of unsanctioned block parades. Belo Horizonte Mayor Álvaro Damião (União Brasil) has publicly criticized these groups, stating they receive no support from the city government. He specifically condemned a bloco that engaged in acts of religious intolerance, stating it will be barred from future accreditation. “We take every precaution to ensure Carnaval is inclusive, even for those who don’t enjoy it,” Damião said, highlighting measures like providing public restrooms away from religious institutions.

Carnaval Organization and Safety Measures

The city’s preparations for Carnaval involve a comprehensive approach to organization and safety. Here’s a breakdown of the key elements:

  • Total Registered Parades: 667 initially
  • Confirmed Parades: 499 as of February 14, 2026
  • Reasons for Cancellation: Voluntary cancellations and failure to meet inspection standards
  • Security Deployment: Full engagement of the Fire Department, with no personnel taking leave
  • City Focus: Combating unsanctioned parades and addressing acts of intolerance

To ensure a safe and enjoyable Carnaval experience, authorities are advising revelers to take several precautions. These include avoiding carrying valuable items, securing mobile phones, staying hydrated, carrying identification (and identification bracelets for children), and utilizing designated restroom facilities while properly disposing of waste.

Colonel Amanda Cristina Miranda’s appointment as commander of the 1st Operational Command of the CBMMG occurred in July 2024, alongside the promotion of Luiz Frederico Barreto Pascoal. Both were promoted to the rank of Colonel by Minas Gerais Governor Romeu Zema based on merit, according to a statement from the CBMMG on July 19, 2024. Amanda Cristina Miranda, originally from Formiga, has a long and distinguished career with the CBMMG, beginning her training in 2000 at the Police Military Academy of Minas Gerais in Belo Horizonte. Arcos Noticias reports she currently resides in Belo Horizonte.

The AOPMBM (Association of Officers of the Military Fire Brigade of Minas Gerais) also congratulated both coronels on their promotions, noting their dedication and service to the state. According to AOPMBM, Colonel Miranda will assume command of the 1st Operational Command of Firefighters (1st COB) in the capital, while Colonel Pascoal will lead the Directorate of Technical Activities.

As Carnaval progresses, authorities will continue to monitor the situation and address any challenges that arise. The focus remains on providing a safe, inclusive, and enjoyable celebration for all residents and visitors of Belo Horizonte. The coming days will reveal the full impact of the parade cancellations and the effectiveness of the city’s security measures.
