Genomic Selection & Elite Cow Breeding: GenMerit’s Approach

by

A new Swiss company, GenMerit AG, launched on February 1, 2026, with the stated goal of advancing Brown Swiss cattle breeding through the development of premium genetics, according to a press release issued February 14, 2026.

Founded by Thaddäus Göhl, Werner Duss, Tom Salzgeber, and Marcel Steinauer, GenMerit aims to connect the “best international Brown-Swiss-Kuhfamilien” – or cow families – from Switzerland, Germany, France, Italy, Austria, and the United States, building new bloodlines through the use of embryos. The company, based in Meggen, Canton of Lucerne, was formally registered in 2025 as CHE-371.117.226, according to business records.

“It’s about the breed – and the breeders who rely on it!” the GenMerit team stated, emphasizing a commitment to the broader breeding community. The core of GenMerit’s operate centers on genomic selection, leveraging deep family histories to identify superior genetics.

Werner Duss, who previously spent 25 years as a Sire Analyst at Swissgenetics, is responsible for Zuchtmanagement – breeding management – at GenMerit. The company intends to primarily utilize embryos that are not sexed, in order to promote both male and female lines, Duss and Göhl explained.

GenMerit’s approach extends beyond simply identifying animals with high genomic scores. The company aims to create more than “the pairing of high numbers,” focusing on a holistic development of desirable traits within the Brown Swiss breed. The firm intends to work closely with Brown Swiss farms to strengthen existing bloodlines and sustainably develop new ones.

The launch of GenMerit follows a growing trend toward genomic selection in cattle breeding, allowing for more precise and efficient genetic improvement. The company’s focus on international collaboration reflects a broader effort to enhance the genetic diversity and quality of Brown Swiss cattle globally.

As of February 15, 2026, GenMerit has not announced any specific partnerships or sales agreements, and the long-term impact of the company’s efforts on the Brown Swiss breed remains to be seen.
