Ben Stokes to Wear Helmet Permanently After Eye Injury & Ashes Review

Ben Stokes Vows to Wear Helmet at All Times After Facial Injury: ‘Cricket Balls Do Serious Damage’

London – England Test captain Ben Stokes has vowed to wear a helmet at all times although batting, both during matches and in practice sessions, following a recent severe facial injury. The 34-year-old all-rounder underwent successful surgery earlier this week after being struck by a cricket ball while coaching at Durham’s indoor cricket centre. The incident has prompted Stokes to reassess his approach to safety, emphasizing the potential for serious harm from even seemingly routine deliveries.

Stokes shared a graphic image of his injuries on Instagram, revealing a heavily swollen and bruised right eye, a graze on his cheek and lip and a bandage in his nose. He captioned the post, “May not look like it… But the surgery was a success.” The incident underscores the inherent risks within the sport, even outside of competitive play, and has sparked a renewed conversation about player safety protocols. The focus now shifts to Stokes’ recovery and his commitment to prioritizing protection moving forward.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, Stokes expressed his changed perspective on helmet utilize. “I never understood the no helmet when spin is bowling, tbf I used to have throw downs with no helmet,” he wrote. “After my accident last week and getting seriously lucky with the outcome I’ll never not wear a helmet, cricket balls do serious damage.” This statement signals a definitive shift in his personal approach to the game and could influence other players to adopt similar precautions.
