Israel-Gaza Conflict: Multiple Deaths Reported in Strikes | Updates 2024

by Alexandra Hartman Editor-in-Chief

At least 12 people were killed in overnight Israeli strikes across the Gaza Strip, according to the Hamas-run civil defense agency, marking a significant escalation of violence in the region. Among the dead is Sami al-Dahdouh, a senior commander in the al-Quds Brigades, the military wing of Palestinian Islamic Jihad. The strikes come after a period of relative calm following a ceasefire brokered by the United States, raising concerns about a potential resurgence of conflict.

The Israeli military confirmed conducting strikes in Gaza, stating they were in response to a ceasefire violation by terror operatives. A military official indicated the actions followed an incident where five gunmen approached troops on the Israeli side of the Yellow Line late Saturday night, which the army described as a “blatant violation” of the ceasefire agreement. The IDF has previously responded to attacks during the ceasefire with waves of strikes against Hamas and affiliated groups.

The heaviest fighting appears to have centered on Gaza City’s Tel al-Hawa neighborhood, where al-Dahdouh was killed in an airstrike. Palestinian media outlets, including the PIJ-affiliated Palestine Today channel, identified the commander as Sami al-Dahdouh, 56. His family has a history of involvement in the conflict; his three brothers, including former Quds Brigades commander Khaled Dahdouh, were reportedly assassinated by Israel in separate attacks in Gaza approximately two decades ago, according to reports.

IDF Response and Ceasefire Concerns

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that the strikes were a direct response to a threat of an immediate attack on soldiers in the Nuseirat area of central Gaza. According to the IDF, a Palestinian Islamic Jihad terrorist was planning the attack and was subsequently killed. This incident highlights the fragility of the US-brokered ceasefire and the ongoing tensions in the region. The IDF has previously reinforced the ceasefire after Hamas violations, leading to retaliatory strikes in southern Gaza.

Separately, the IDF and Shin Bet announced the killing of Muhammad Issam Hassan al-Habil, who was identified as the individual responsible for the murder of IDF Cpl. Noa Marciano. This action, confirmed by the IDF, underscores Israel’s commitment to pursuing those responsible for attacks against its citizens and soldiers.

Broader Regional Dynamics

Reports suggest a potential realignment of terrorist groups within Gaza, with some reportedly shifting their allegiance towards Palestinian Islamic Jihad should Hamas weaken its control. According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, this shift could alter the power dynamics within the territory. Though, other reports indicate Hamas is actively working to reassert its dominance as the ruling force in Gaza, according to The Telegraph.

Palestinian officials reported that 11 people were killed in Israeli airstrikes on Gaza, with some strikes targeting what was believed to be a commander of the Islamic Jihad group in the Tel Al-Hawa neighborhood in Gaza City. Rescuers are continuing to search for victims amidst the rubble, and the full extent of the casualties remains unclear. The strikes also reportedly targeted a tent camp, resulting in further civilian deaths, according to Palestinian officials.

The recent escalation in violence raises concerns about the long-term stability of the ceasefire and the potential for a wider conflict. The situation remains fluid, and further developments are expected in the coming days. The international community is closely monitoring the situation and urging restraint from all parties involved.

What comes next will likely depend on the response from Hamas and other militant groups in Gaza. The IDF has indicated it will continue to respond to any threats to its security, and further strikes are possible. The focus will be on whether the current escalation will remain contained or escalate into a broader conflict.
