Gonzaga Overcomes Hostile Road Environment, Claims First Place in West Coast Conference

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The No. 12 Gonzaga Bulldogs secured a crucial 94-86 victory over the Santa Clara Broncos on Saturday night, reclaiming first place in the West Coast Conference. The win spoiled Santa Clara’s perfect 13-0 home record and halted a nine-game winning streak for the Broncos.

Gonzaga (25-2, 13-1 WCC) relied heavily on a dominant interior performance, scoring 66 points in the paint. Graduate forward Graham Ike led the charge with 21 points and a season-high 15 rebounds, his seventh consecutive game with at least 20 points. Adam Miller added 20 points, while Tyon Grant-Foster and Emmanuel Innocenti contributed with 20 and 16 points respectively.

Santa Clara (22-6, 13-2 WCC) entered the game with their best start since the 1969-70 season, having won 13 of their previous 14 games. Despite a strong start and a raucous home crowd, the Broncos were unable to contain Gonzaga’s inside presence.

The game was a physical affair, with Ike facing constant challenges from Santa Clara’s 7-foot-1 center, Bukky Oboye, and enduring vocal opposition from the Broncos’ student section, the Ruff Riders. Despite the hostile environment, Ike remained composed, finishing with 21 points on 7-of-12 shooting and dishing out four assists.

“He’s clearly one of the best players in all of college basketball,” Santa Clara coach Herb Sendek said after the game. “It’s surprising to me when you look at some of these lists that are generated, he’s a glaring omission sometimes. If you base something on productivity, who does it any better night in and night out than he does?”

Gonzaga coach Mark Few echoed that sentiment, stating, “I consider it’s time he starts seeing his name pop up on first team All-American or second team All-American. I know we’re all obsessed and infatuated with these freshmen, but he’s literally been delivering night in and night out at the highest level.”

Miller’s late-game surge proved pivotal for the Bulldogs, scoring 16 of his 21 points in the final seven minutes. He finished the night shooting 6-for-9 from the field and a near-perfect 7-for-8 from the free-throw line. Grant-Foster also played a key role, finishing with 20 points and seven rebounds, while Innocenti provided consistent scoring and rebounding off the bench.

Despite Gonzaga’s strong performance, the Bulldogs struggled from beyond the arc, shooting just 3 of 18 from three-point range. However, their efficient shooting overall (56%, 36 of 64) and dominance in the paint proved too much for Santa Clara to overcome.

Christian Hammond led Santa Clara with 16 points. The Broncos forced several early turnovers, but Gonzaga settled into the game and ultimately controlled the tempo.

Gonzaga’s victory marks their 19th consecutive season with 25 or more wins, an NCAA Division-1 record. Coach Mark Few now holds a 53-6 all-time record against Santa Clara. Sendek, meanwhile, fell to 2-19 against Few.

Gonzaga will next face the San Francisco Dons on Wednesday, Feb. 18, at the Chase Center in San Francisco. Santa Clara will travel to face San Francisco next Saturday.
