Winter Olympics: Desmet, Marchant & Meylemans – Latest Updates & Results

by Luis Mendoza - Sport Editor

Milaan, Italy – The Olympic Winter Games are underway, and Belgian athletes are already making their mark. Hanne Desmet is set to compete in the short track 1,000-meter event starting at 11:00 local time, hoping to add to her medal tally after a strong performance earlier in the games. Meanwhile, skiers Armand Marchant and Sam Maes will take to the slopes for the slalom competition, continuing Belgium’s push for success at the Winter Olympics.

The Belgian team, boasting its largest delegation ever with 30 athletes, is aiming to surpass the two medals won at the 2022 Beijing Games. Bart Swings, a previous gold medalist in mass-start speed skating, and Hanne Desmet, who secured bronze in the 1,000m short track in 2022, are considered key contenders for medals. This year’s team represents a significant increase in support from the Belgian government, contributing to the expanded presence and heightened expectations.

Hanne Desmet’s Pursuit of Gold

Hanne Desmet enters the 1,000-meter short track final with confidence, stating, “I sense exceptionally good, the 1,000 meters can definitely be mine,” according to De Standaard. She will compete in four events overall: 500m, 1,000m, 1,500m, and the 3,000m relay. The Desmet family is experiencing a mix of emotions at the games; although Hanne excels, her brother, Stijn Desmet, faced a disappointing early exit, describing himself as feeling “foolish” after his performance, Sporza reported.

Marchant and Maes on the Slalom Course

Armand Marchant will be looking to build on his recent success, having already secured Belgium’s first-ever Alpine Ski World Cup podium finish with a silver medal in slalom in Gurgl, Austria, just 0.07 seconds behind the winner. He and Sam Maes will face a challenging course as they compete in the Olympic slalom event. The Brazilian Pinheiro Braathen currently leads after the first run of the giant slalom, while Loena Hendrickx has begun her preparations for competition in Milan, GVA reports.

Mixed Results for the Belgian Team

While hopes are high for Desmet and the skiers, Kim Meylemans faced a difficult competition in the skeleton event. Despite giving her all, a medal proved out of reach, as she finished outside the top contenders, HLN stated. Maximilien Drion also represents Team Belgium in the new sport of ski mountaineering, having qualified for the games through his high ranking last winter.

Belgium has already secured places in biathlon, with four men and four women qualified to compete in the three relay events and individual races. Nina Pinzarrone also qualified for the games in figure skating, finishing in the top 10 at the World Championships.

The Belgian team’s performance at the Winter Olympics is being closely watched, with a nation hoping to see its athletes achieve new heights. The coming days will be crucial as Desmet, Marchant, and Maes strive for success, adding to the excitement and national pride surrounding Team Belgium’s participation in the games.
