Couple Survives Near-Death Snorkeling Incident in Gili Islands

“I thought I had lost her for those few minutes. I couldn’t witness her. I was so scared. I didn’t know whether she had drowned or whether she was on the other side of the ocean,” recalls Trishina Kripalani. One year ago, Kripalani and her partner, Mihika Shenoy, experienced a life-altering moment during their holiday in Indonesia’s Gili Islands. What was meant to be a joyful snorkeling trip turned into a harrowing struggle for survival when a sudden shift in currents separated them.

“This massive wave, out of nowhere, just engulfed us. It separated us,” Shenoy explains. The couple lost all their gear and visibility, leaving them unaware of each other’s whereabouts. “I couldn’t find her until I started screaming. And then she heard my voice,” Shenoy recalls. Battling the challenging waves, they swam toward each other, driven by a profound need to reconnect. “I knew I was bleeding all over due to the fact that my legs were cramping. I was in so much pain,” Kripalani adds. Despite her injuries, they managed to reach the shore, where their emotional responses contrasted sharply: “She was laughing. I was crying. I was so upset that this happened. What if something worse had happened to her?” Shenoy reflects, revealing the depths of their love.

Despite the traumatic experience, the couple’s shared resilience shone through. Just two days later, they bandaged their wounds and returned to the ocean, this time scuba diving. “Being underwater just feels like a whole different world. Being with her underwater is definitely the most intimate for me because it’s just us. And no matter what, she’s the only one I want to be doing this with,” Kripalani shares.

From Bumble to Bonding Over Adventures

Kripalani and Shenoy’s love story began in the midst of the pandemic in August 2020, when Mumbai was slowly reopening after a prolonged lockdown. Matching on Bumble, they quickly connected, with Shenoy initially suspecting Kripalani’s popular DJ profile was fake. However, their virtual interactions blossomed into a meaningful relationship. After weeks of chatting, they finally met for a drive in the rain, feeling as though they had known each other forever.

Even though they were not an official couple yet, their spontaneous five-day trip to Goa solidified their bond. “Looking back, it was quite a risk to take that trip. We weren’t even a couple!” Kripalani reflects. However, that trip extended to ten days, and during that time, they discovered each other’s quirks and habits through shared experiences—whether lounging on the beach or enjoying late-night conversations. One unforgettable moment involved a swing at the restaurant Mojigao, where they engaged in deep conversations and laughter. “I remember calling my mother and telling her I’m in love,” Kripalani recalls.

Learning and Growing Together

As they traveled together, Kripalani and Shenoy grew even closer, realizing their adventurous spirits complemented each other. Shenoy expressed admiration for how alive Kripalani was during their travels, pushing her out of her comfort zone. “I’m happy to be lost and not getting a flight back in a foreign country if she’s with me,” Shenoy says, highlighting the trust and joy they find in their relationship.

However, their adventures were not without chaos. On a vacation in Phuket with Kripalani’s family, they decided to extend their trip last minute, facing the usual travel challenges, such as limited communication and funds. They ventured to Paradise Beach, known for its stunning beauty but not for their luck that day. “We were in the water, and I had a jellyfish wrap around my arm,” Kripalani laughs now. The situation escalated when a misguided attempt to treat the sting only made it worse. “I got a full princess treatment that day,” she quips, recalling how Shenoy managed to secure them a boat instead of hiking to a hospital.

Reflections on Love and Adventure

In spite of their impulsiveness, the couple has learned to navigate through seemingly impossible situations together. Their close calls, whether nearly missing flights or navigating strange cities, have only deepened their appreciation for one another. “You just realize—at least I did—that she’s the only one that I want to do these things with, right? We are grateful to have each other in this life,” Kripalani concludes.

As they look to the future, Kripalani and Shenoy emphasize the importance of cherishing every moment, no matter how chaotic life gets. “We try to create the most of literally every moment,” Kripalani sums up, encapsulating the essence of their relationship.

What comes next for this adventurous couple remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: their bond, tested by trials and strengthened through love, will continue to thrive as they embrace life’s unpredictability together.
