Sharks Appoint Scott Mathie as New Attack Coach | SA Rugby Mag

by Luis Mendoza - Sport Editor

Durban – The Hollywoodbets Sharks are poised to bolster their coaching staff with the appointment of Scott Mathie as their new attack coach, signaling a clear intent to sharpen their offensive capabilities. Mathie, currently with Edinburgh Rugby, is set to return to his hometown of Durban at the conclusion of the 2025/26 season, according to multiple reports.

The move comes as JP Pietersen is expected to be formally announced as the full-time head coach of the Sharks this week, solidifying his position after serving as interim coach since December 2025. Pietersen is anticipated to retain his existing assistant coaches – Joey Mongalo, Warren Whiteley, and Philip Lemmer – whereas Mathie’s arrival fills a crucial void left by Dave Williams, who has transitioned to a consulting role with the USA Eagles.

Mathie’s appointment represents a homecoming of sorts. Born in Durban, he previously represented the Sharks as a scrumhalf between 2006 and 2008. He also brings a pre-existing professional relationship with Edinburgh coach Sean Everitt, having worked alongside him at the Sharks in previous roles, where Everitt held a senior coaching position and Mathie was involved with the junior structures.

Edinburgh Rugby confirmed on Monday that Mathie, 43, would be leaving the club at the end of the season to pursue a new opportunity. Edinburgh Rugby announced on X, “Attack and Backs Coach Scott Mathie will depart the club at the end of the season to take up a new coaching opportunity elsewhere. We wish him the incredibly best in his next challenge.”

Proven Track Record

Mathie joined Edinburgh in August 2024, bringing with him a successful track record from Major League Rugby. He previously guided the New England Free Jacks to back-to-back MLR titles in 2023 and 2024, establishing himself as a dynamic and effective attack coach. Everitt praised Mathie’s impact at Edinburgh, stating, “He is a talented coach who has brought a lot of energy and insight to our attacking game since he arrived in Edinburgh.” Everitt added that Mathie “still has a lot to contribute over the remainder of the current campaign.”

Sharks’ Offensive Strategy

The Sharks have been actively seeking a specialist attack coach to revitalize their offensive play. The team is currently competing in the United Rugby Championship (URC), and a potent attack will be crucial as they continue to challenge for a playoff spot. Rugby365 reports that Mathie’s arrival is seen as a key step in achieving this goal.

Pietersen’s expected formal appointment as head coach, alongside the retention of key assistants and the addition of Mathie, signals a period of stability and strategic development for the Sharks. The team is undergoing a structural change, with John Plumtree moving into a consultancy and mentoring role, as the Sharks look to build on their recent performances.

What’s Next for the Sharks

The Sharks are expected to formally announce the full coaching structure this week, confirming Pietersen’s position and introducing Scott Mathie to the Durban faithful. Fans will be eager to see how Mathie’s attacking philosophy translates to the Sharks’ playing style in the coming seasons. The focus will be on building a cohesive and dynamic attack capable of consistently challenging the top teams in the URC.
