New Delhi – Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the India AI Impact Summit 2026 on Monday, positioning India as a central player in the global artificial intelligence landscape. The summit, themed “Sarvajana Hitaya, Sarvajana Sukhaya — Welfare for All, Happiness for All,” aims to harness AI for human-centric progress and inclusive development, but the event’s opening day was marred by logistical issues, prompting apologies from a key minister.
The summit brings together leaders from over 45 countries, including France’s Emmanuel Macron, Brazil’s Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, alongside technology giants like Microsoft, IBM, and Zoom. India’s ambition to shape global AI norms while bolstering its domestic capabilities is underscored by the event, which is the first major AI summit hosted in the Global South. The government has invested Rs 10,372 crore – approximately $1.2 billion USD based on current exchange rates – under the IndiaAI Mission to build a comprehensive AI ecosystem, onboarding more than 38,000 GPUs for shared compute access and supporting the development of 12 indigenous foundation models and over 30 India-specific AI applications.
Summit Launch Overshadowed by Logistical Issues
Despite the high-profile attendance and ambitious goals, the summit’s opening day was plagued by reports of long queues and confusion, particularly for exhibitors. Minister of Railways, Communications and Electronics & Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, publicly apologized for the inconvenience, acknowledging “mismanagement” at the Bharat Mandapam venue. Vaishnaw announced the establishment of a “war room” to address the issues and ensure a smoother experience for attendees going forward, according to reports from the Times of India.
The Indian National Congress also weighed in, with party chief Mallikarjun Kharge claiming “utter chaos” at the summit, as reported by Hindustan Times. Vaishnaw responded by stating the government was “open-minded” and committed to resolving the problems.

Prime Minister Modi emphasized India’s leadership in the global AI transformation, citing the nation’s 1.4 billion population, robust digital infrastructure, vibrant startup ecosystem, and cutting-edge research as key strengths. He highlighted the transformative potential of AI across sectors including healthcare, education, agriculture, governance, and enterprise. The Prime Minister expressed confidence that the summit’s deliberations would foster global collaboration and responsible AI development, shaping a future driven by innovation and opportunity.
The India AI Impact Summit 2026, initially announced at the France AI Action Summit, builds on momentum from international forums such as the UK AI Safety Summit and the AI Seoul Summit. It represents a significant step in India’s efforts to establish itself as a major force in the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence. The event is scheduled to run through February 20, featuring over 3,250 speakers and more than 500 sessions.
