Botswana Badminton Championship: Results & Updates

Gaborone, Botswana – Koceila Mammeri and Youcef Sabri Medel of Algeria claimed the men’s doubles title at the All Africa Senior Championships in Botswana, defeating a spirited challenge from the Mulenga brothers. The Algerian pair continued their dominant run in African badminton, adding another gold medal to their impressive collection.

The victory marks the latest chapter in a successful partnership for Mammeri and Medel, who have consistently proven to be a formidable force in the men’s doubles discipline. Their performance in Gaborone underscores Algeria’s growing strength in the sport and solidifies their position as one of the continent’s leading badminton teams. The Mulenga brothers put up a strong fight, but ultimately couldn’t overcome the experience and synergy of the Algerian duo.

Algeria’s Doubles Dominance Continues

Mammeri and Medel have a long history of success at the African Championships, having secured gold medals in 2017, 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022, according to information from the Badminton World Federation website. This latest triumph in Botswana further cements their legacy as one of the most decorated doubles pairs in African badminton history. Koceila Mammeri, born in 1999, currently holds a world ranking of 58 in men’s doubles with Youcef Sabri Medel as of October 29, 2024 according to Everything Explained Today.

Youcef Sabri Medel, born on July 5, 1996, has also achieved individual success, winning a silver medal in boys’ doubles and a bronze in boys’ singles at the 2014 African Youth Games in Gaborone, Botswana as reported by Wikipedia. He currently has a highest men’s singles ranking of 116, achieved on September 27, 2022.

Mammeri’s Versatility Shines

While renowned for his doubles prowess, Koceila Mammeri also demonstrated his versatility by achieving success in mixed doubles events. He secured mixed doubles gold at the 2019 African Games with Linda Mazri and again in 2023 with Tanina Mammeri as detailed on Everything Explained Today. He also won mixed doubles gold with Tanina Mammeri in 2021 and 2022. His current highest ranking in mixed doubles is 41, achieved on October 29, 2024.

The 2024 African Championships saw Mammeri achieve a double title, winning both the men’s doubles with Medel and the mixed doubles with Tanina Violette Mammeri according to the BWF Thomas Uber Cups website. This accomplishment marked the fourth time Mammeri has achieved a double title at the All Africa Individual Championships in the last six editions.
