by Sophie Lin - Technology Editor

Fans of the classic Pokémon games have a modern way to experience the nostalgia. Nintendo and The Pokémon Company have announced that the soundtracks for Pokémon FireRed Version and Pokémon LeafGreen Version are now available to subscribers of the Nintendo Switch Online service. This release arrives ahead of the games’ full launch on the Nintendo Switch on February 27th, offering a sonic preview of the adventures to come.

Starting today, Nintendo Switch Online members can access the soundtracks through the Nintendo Music app on their mobile devices. The collection features 43 tracks, totaling approximately 1 hour and 6 minutes of music, designed to transport listeners back to the Kanto region. This early access to the music provides a delightful way for longtime fans to relive cherished memories and for newcomers to get a taste of the iconic soundscape that defined a generation of Pokémon gaming.

Pokémon FireRed Version and Pokémon LeafGreen Version originally debuted in 2004 for the Game Boy Advance, serving as enhanced remakes of the original 1996 Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue games released on the Game Boy. These remakes introduced updated graphics, new features, and expanded storylines although retaining the core gameplay that captivated players worldwide. The upcoming Nintendo Switch versions aim to bring this beloved experience to a new audience and offer a fresh perspective for returning players.

The release of these soundtracks is part of a broader celebration of Pokémon’s 30th anniversary. Nintendo is capitalizing on the wave of nostalgia with these digital releases, available individually in English, French, or Spanish on the My Nintendo Store and Nintendo eShop, as reported by Nintendo’s official website.

A Nostalgic Return to Kanto

The Nintendo Switch versions of Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen promise to recapture the magic of the original games while incorporating modern conveniences. Players will once again embark on a journey to become Pokémon League Champions, exploring the Kanto region, battling Gym Leaders, and completing the Pokédex. The digital exclusive includes the Sevii Islands, offering even more Pokémon to discover and challenges to overcome. According to Nintendo’s product page, the games are compatible with the Nintendo Switch 2 system.

Enhanced Features for a New Generation

These updated versions build upon the foundation of the 2004 remakes, incorporating all the enhancements introduced during the Game Boy Advance era, including abilities, natures, weather conditions, and held items. Players can also select their character’s gender, adding a layer of personalization to their adventure. A significant improvement for modern players is the ability to link up with friends via local co-op without the need for a Game Link Cable, a feature that required a separate accessory in the original release. The games have received an aggregate score of 81 percent on Metacritic, according to Wikipedia.

The digital versions of Pokémon FireRed Version and Pokémon LeafGreen Version will be available on February 27th. The game file size is estimated at 40 MB for both the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, as detailed on Nintendo’s website.

As the Pokémon franchise celebrates its 30th anniversary, this release serves as a reminder of the enduring appeal of the original games and the excitement surrounding their return to modern consoles. The availability of the soundtrack now allows fans to immerse themselves in the world of Kanto before the full games launch, building anticipation for the next chapter in their Pokémon journey.
