DiskDigger Alternatives: Photo Recovery & Similar Apps – App Store

by

Defiant Technologies’ data recovery application, DiskDigger, has seen a surge in user attention as data loss incidents develop into increasingly common, with versions available for both Android and iPhone platforms.

The Android version of DiskDigger, available on the Google Play Store, allows users to recover a range of file types, including photos, videos, documents and other non-media files, from both internal and external memory. The application boasts “powerful data recovery features” capable of locating files even after accidental deletion or memory card reformats, according to the app’s description. Users can directly upload recovered files to cloud storage services like Google Drive and Dropbox, or save them to a different local folder on their device. A feature allowing users to permanently delete unwanted files, labeled “Clean up,” is currently experimental and available only during basic scans.

DiskDigger’s functionality varies depending on whether the Android device is rooted. Non-rooted devices are limited to a “basic scan” that searches existing internal storage, thumbnail caches, and databases. Rooted devices, though, gain access to a “full scan” that searches the entire device memory for recoverable files. The app requires the “Access all files” permission to function effectively, a request that users must enable to allow DiskDigger to search all locations on the device.

For iPhone users, DiskDigger Photo Recovery, designed specifically for Apple’s ecosystem, focuses on recovering photos, and videos. The app, available on the App Store, features a “quick & deep scan” functionality, allowing users to rapidly locate recently deleted media or perform a more thorough search for older lost files. A preview function allows users to view recovered files before restoring them. However, recent user reviews on the App Store highlight concerns regarding intrusive advertising and functionality issues, with one user reporting that the recovery feature was not working despite the presence of ads.

The free version of DiskDigger for Android recovers only photos and videos, while the Pro version expands recovery capabilities to other file types and enables file uploads via FTP. The Pro version also offers more efficient file deletion and free space wiping features. According to DiskDigger’s website, the application is compatible with Android devices running Android 2.2 (Froyo) or higher.

As of October 5, 2025, the Android version of DiskDigger was updated with unspecified tool improvements. The app’s privacy policy and terms and conditions were last updated in January 2026, according to the iPhone app listing.
