Teen Rescued From Bus in Argentina: Trafficking Ring Exposed

by Omar El Sayed - World Editor

A quick-thinking passenger intervened to prevent a potential human trafficking incident aboard a long-distance bus in Argentina, alerting authorities to a 15-year-old girl who was being transported without identification and under the influence of sedatives. The incident, which unfolded in September, has led to the arrest and pre-trial detention of two individuals accused of attempting to traffic the teenager to Peru.

The passenger’s vigilance stemmed from observing an unusually close relationship between the girl and a male adult traveling with her. According to reports, the man and a woman were “kissing constantly” and embracing, while the girl was deliberately concealing her face with a hat and hood. This behavior, coupled with the man’s apparent attempts to silence the girl, raised immediate red flags.

The bus, originating from the Once district of Buenos Aires, was en route to northern Argentina when the passenger contacted Gendarmería (Argentina’s national security force). Upon intercepting the bus on National Route 9, near kilometer 152, authorities discovered the teenager was not on the passenger manifest and possessed no identification, luggage, or travel documents. J. J. M. E. And his mother, E. M. E. C., were immediately detained, as they were traveling with the girl but had not included her name on the passenger list.

Initial assessments by Gendarmería indicated the girl was in a state of “acute drowsiness,” making it difficult to rouse her and obtain basic information. She initially provided conflicting accounts of her age, first claiming to be an adult, then stating she was 17, and even presenting a disability certificate belonging to another person. A gendarme reported the girl was “deeply asleep and difficult to wake up,” and that the man consistently answered questions on her behalf, with the girl glancing at him before responding.

During a private interview, the teenager revealed her true age – 15 – and detailed a harrowing situation. She stated she was being transported to Peru to act as a drug mule. She explained that she and her mother were living on the streets and had been promised money, housing, and a car in exchange for transporting narcotics. However, she alleged that the offer turned into threats when she expressed reluctance to participate. This account aligns with concerns about the vulnerabilities faced by adolescents, a critical period of transition between childhood and adulthood.

The Federal Chamber of Buenos Aires, comprised of judges Martín Irurzun and Eduardo Guillermo Farah, confirmed the preventative detention and prosecution of both the man and his mother. The decision was supported by reports from the National Directorate of Migration and the Public Prosecutor’s Office for Trafficking in Persons and Exploitation (PROTEX), which documented irregular migratory movements of the detainees to and from Peru. The court cited the circumstances of the girl’s discovery – lacking documentation, visibly sedated, and under the control of adults – along with the passenger’s report and the victim’s subsequent testimony, as sufficient evidence of an aggravated human trafficking attempt.

The case highlights the ongoing threat of human trafficking, particularly involving vulnerable populations. According to the stages of adolescent development, this age group is particularly susceptible to exploitation due to their developing identities and increased independence.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the extent of the trafficking network and any potential accomplices. The next procedural step involves further investigation and preparation for trial, where the accused will face charges related to human trafficking. The case underscores the importance of public awareness and vigilance in identifying and reporting suspected trafficking activities.
