NEW YORK – Cade Cunningham delivered a dominant performance, scoring 42 points and dishing out 13 assists, to lead the Detroit Pistons to a 126-111 victory over the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden on Thursday night. The win marked the third consecutive victory for Detroit against New York this season, solidifying their position atop the Eastern Conference.
Cunningham’s performance was particularly noteworthy, becoming the first visiting player to reach 40+ points and 10+ assists at Madison Square Garden since LeBron James achieved the feat in 2009, according to CBS News. The Pistons, currently boasting a record of 41-13, have established themselves as a force in the NBA, and Cunningham’s emergence as a leading MVP candidate is central to their success.
Pistons Overcome Early Deficit
The Knicks started strong, briefly leading by as many as seven points early in the game. However, the Pistons quickly responded with a 21-8 run, seizing control of the momentum. Detroit continued to build on their lead, ending the second quarter on a 7-0 run to establish a 58-48 halftime advantage. The Pistons extended their lead in the third quarter, despite a brief push from New York, and never relinquished their grip on the game.
Paul Reed contributed 18 points, filling in for the suspended Jalen Duren, even as Tobias Harris added 11 points and 10 rebounds, securing a double-double. Ausar Thompson also chipped in with 10 points for the Pistons. Detroit’s success came despite being without both Duren, their leading rebounder, and Isaiah Stewart, who is serving a seven-game suspension stemming from a brawl with the Charlotte Hornets on February 11, Yahoo Sports reported.
Knicks Struggle from Three-Point Range
The Knicks, led by Jalen Brunson’s 30 points and Karl-Anthony Towns’ 21 points and 11 rebounds, struggled significantly from beyond the arc, shooting a dismal 23% (8 of 35) from three-point range. Landry Shamet added 15 points, and Josh Hart contributed 11, but their efforts were not enough to overcome Detroit’s balanced attack. New York’s poor shooting performance was particularly pronounced in the first half, where they went 1-for-16 from three-point distance.
Cunningham’s MVP Case Gains Momentum
Cunningham’s performance is fueling discussions about his candidacy for the NBA’s Most Valuable Player award. The Athletic notes that Cunningham is on pace to achieve career-best numbers in several key statistical categories, including plus-minus (plus-8.1), offensive rating (118.5), and assists (9.7). His ability to consistently impact the game on both ends of the court is making a compelling case for league MVP.
Pistons coach J.B. Bickerstaff downplayed any suggestion that his team was particularly motivated to defeat the Knicks, stating, “It’s just playing good basketball,” via The Athletic. “This isn’t an ‘Us vs. Knicks’ thing. Our guys have done a great job all year approaching each game the same way.”
Looking Ahead
The Pistons will continue their road trip, facing the Chicago Bulls on Saturday. The Knicks will return home to host the Houston Rockets on the same day. Detroit’s continued success will be closely watched as they navigate the remainder of the regular season and prepare for a potential deep playoff run. The Knicks, meanwhile, will require to address their shooting woes and find ways to compete with the top teams in the Eastern Conference.
