Jebel Hafeet, UAE – David Gaudu of Groupama-FDJ United delivered a strong performance on Saturday, securing a ninth-place finish on Stage 6 of the UAE Tour. The climb to the summit of Jebel Hafeet marked a significant step forward for Gaudu, who is rebuilding his form after a challenging off-season. This result places him firmly among the general classification contenders as the race nears its conclusion.

The sixth stage of the UAE Tour featured a relatively flat 150-kilometer ride leading to the challenging ascent of Jebel Hafeet, a traditional climb measuring 10.6 kilometers with an average gradient of 7%. Nine riders initially attempted a breakaway, including Johan Jacobs and Axel Huens from Groupama-FDJ United, aiming to establish a lead before the final climb. According to team director Stéphane Goubert, the strategy was to “maintain a good dynamic, work towards what’s next, and prepare for other races,” even acknowledging the breakaway’s limited chances of success.

Despite the breakaway group not gaining a substantial advantage, their presence proved beneficial for Gaudu’s team. Goubert explained that it allowed them to provide crucial support, including hydration, to Gaudu at the base of the climb, particularly important given the high temperatures. As the race progressed, the peloton gradually thinned, leaving approximately twenty riders in contention as they approached the midpoint of the ascent.

Isaac del Toro launched a decisive attack, forcing Gaudu to respond. While Gaudu lost some ground, he managed to stay within striking distance of the leaders. Goubert emphasized the team’s strategy was not to exhaust Gaudu by chasing every move, but to manage his effort and position him for a strong finish. Gaudu ultimately finished 48 seconds behind stage winner Isaac del Toro, but crucially, only 12 seconds off the top five, demonstrating his improving condition.

“I had good sensations, it feels good to be at this level,” Gaudu said after the stage. Goubert echoed this sentiment, stating, “We are continuing to progress, step by step.” Gaudu’s performance resulted in a two-place gain in the general classification, moving him to 18th overall.

The 2024 UAE Tour, a key event on the UCI World Tour calendar, is scheduled to conclude on Sunday with a stage expected to favor sprinters. The race has seen its share of challenges, notably the cancellation of stages in the 2020 edition due to COVID-19 concerns, as reported by Wikipedia. This year’s event, however, appears to be proceeding smoothly, providing a valuable testing ground for riders preparing for the upcoming season.

Gaudu’s strong showing at Jebel Hafeet signals a positive trajectory for the Groupama-FDJ United rider. His ability to remain competitive on a challenging climb suggests he is regaining the form that has made him a prominent figure in professional cycling. The final stage of the UAE Tour will offer another opportunity for Gaudu to demonstrate his progress and potentially improve his overall standing.

Looking ahead, Gaudu’s performance will be closely watched as he continues his season. His team will likely focus on building upon this momentum and refining his strategy for upcoming races. The UAE Tour serves as an important benchmark, and Gaudu’s ninth-place finish provides a solid foundation for his ambitions this year.
