MLB Update: Julien, Toro, Lopez & Jays/Red Sox Highlights

by Luis Mendoza - Sport Editor

Denver, CO – Édouard Julien, recently acquired by the Colorado Rockies, registered one hit in four at-bats during Sunday’s game against the Texas Rangers. The Canadian infielder, starting at second base, also recorded two strikeouts as the Rockies continued their spring training preparations. This marks an early opportunity for Julien to showcase his potential with his recent team after being traded from the Minnesota Twins on January 28, 2026, as reported by Purple Row.

The Rockies acquired Julien, along with right-handed pitcher Pierson Ohl, in exchange for minor league pitcher Jace Kaminska and cash considerations. Julien, 26, joins a Rockies team looking for offensive production and versatility on the infield, particularly at second base, a position he has started 159 games at throughout his career. His arrival comes after a 2025 season where he struggled to replicate his breakout 2023 performance, hitting .220 with a .633 OPS in 64 games, according to Purple Row. However, he demonstrated potential in Triple-A, batting .276 with an .879 OPS over 70 games.

Beyond Julien’s performance, several other Canadian players saw action on Sunday. Abraham Toro of the Kansas City Royals went hitless in two at-bats during a 3-1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers, starting at third base. Otto Lopez, a Quebec native, was also unable to record a hit in two plate appearances as the Miami Marlins fell to the Washington Nationals 16-8.

In a high-scoring contest between the Toronto Blue Jays and the Boston Red Sox, Eloy Jimenez had a strong offensive showing, hitting a home run and driving in two runs with two hits in three at-bats, crossing the plate twice. However, the Blue Jays ultimately lost the game 11-10, partially due to a difficult outing from Yariel Rodriguez, who allowed six runs and five hits in just two innings pitched.

Julien’s acquisition by the Rockies represents a change of scenery for the former Minnesota Twin, who burst onto the scene in 2023, slashing .263/.381/.459 with 16 home runs and finishing seventh in American League Rookie of the Year voting, as noted by Wikipedia. The Rockies are hoping a fresh start will allow him to rediscover that form and contribute to their lineup.

The Rockies’ decision to acquire Julien signals a willingness to capture a chance on a player with demonstrated potential, even if his recent performance has been inconsistent. The team is looking for offensive upgrades and Julien’s left-handed bat and positional flexibility offer valuable assets.

As the Rockies continue their spring training schedule, all eyes will be on Julien to see how he adapts to his new surroundings and whether he can capitalize on the opportunity to establish himself as a key contributor. The team will be evaluating his performance closely as they finalize their roster for the upcoming 2026 season.

What remains to be seen is how Julien will perform consistently over a full season and whether he can address the high strikeout rate (31.7%) that has plagued him throughout his major league career, as Purple Row reported. His ability to do so will be crucial to his success in Colorado.
