Isack Hadjar: Ready for F1 Debut Despite Testing Issues | Australia GP Preview

by Luis Mendoza - Sport Editor

Melbourne is on the horizon for Isack Hadjar as he wraps up his initial test weeks as a full Red Bull Racing driver. Despite some challenges during pre-season testing, the young driver expresses optimism heading into the Formula 1 season opener in Australia from March 6th to 8th. Hadjar is focused on translating the data gathered during testing into a strong start to the season.

“I perceive as well prepared as possible for Melbourne,” Hadjar stated. “We have worked through a lot of test points and I am very satisfied with our understanding of the car.” The transition to Red Bull appears to have been smooth for the 21-year-old, who previously participated in FP1 sessions for the team in 2023 and 2024. He also benefited from simulator work at Milton Keynes and a pre-existing relationship with team principal Laurent Mekies from their time together at Racing Bulls.

Yet, the road to the Australian Grand Prix wasn’t without its hurdles. A coolant system pressure loss hampered Hadjar’s running during the second day of testing in Bahrain, costing him valuable track time. “That’s a lot,” he acknowledged, “But we always make sure that we work compactly and get the best out of the other training units.”

Smooth Transition to Red Bull Racing

Hadjar emphasized how familiar he already was with the Red Bull setup, easing his integration into the team. “That made the transition a lot easier. The change went very smoothly, I didn’t feel like I was moving to a new team. I was very lucky,” he explained. This familiarity is particularly noteworthy given the presence of reigning world champion Max Verstappen, known for his competitive drive and, historically, teammates who haven’t enjoyed long tenures alongside him.

The initial shakedown with the RB22 in Barcelona also didn’t proceed entirely as planned, with Hadjar joining the running on the second day. Despite these early setbacks, the team is confident in the progress made during testing.

Focus on Correlation and Improvement

Looking ahead to Australia, Hadjar isn’t setting overly ambitious expectations. His primary goal is to effectively utilize the data collected during testing. “The goal is to make the most of what we’ve learned, correlate everything again and make sure we’re moving in the right direction,” he said. This approach reflects a pragmatic focus on building a solid foundation for the season.

Although Hadjar and Red Bull focus on their preparations, other teams faced significant challenges during the Bahrain tests. Aston Martin, for example, experienced a hard test period, as highlighted in a recent report detailing a Honda-related crisis impacting the team’s performance. GPblog reported on Red Bull’s own issues during testing in Bahrain, including Hadjar being forced to stop testing due to a problem.

Hadjar’s collaboration with Verstappen has reportedly been positive so far, suggesting a potentially productive working relationship within the team. The focus now shifts to translating the lessons learned from testing into on-track performance at Albert Park.

As the Formula 1 season begins, all eyes will be on how Hadjar adapts to the pressures of a full-time race seat and contributes to Red Bull’s championship ambitions. The Australian Grand Prix will provide the first opportunity to assess the team’s progress and Hadjar’s potential.
