Athletes representing the state of Sonora are scheduled to return home by plane after recent violence in Jalisco prompted concerns for their safety, according to Alfonso Durazo, the state’s governor. The decision comes after parents contacted both their children and the Sports Commission of the State of Sonora (Codeson) expressing anxieties about a potential land route back to Sonora.
The young athletes had traveled to compete beginning on Wednesday, February 18th, coinciding with a weekend marked by increased aggression in various states across the country. Given the escalating situation, officials prioritized the athletes’ well-being and opted for air travel to ensure a safe return. Durazo confirmed that the athletes are currently safe and have been receiving support from Codeson throughout the ordeal.
The government of Tlaxcala has likewise taken steps to bolster security in the region. According to data from the Government of Tlaxcala, the Permanent Security Table has implemented coordinated patrols for at least 48 hours in bordering areas and strategic locations. These patrols will involve both ground and air operations along roads connecting Tlaxcala to neighboring states, aiming to prevent any disruption to public order.
Codeson Provides Support to Athletes
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by athletes traveling to competitions in regions experiencing heightened security risks. Codeson has been actively involved in coordinating the safe return of the Sonora athletes, demonstrating a commitment to their welfare. The organization delivered support to 540 athletes on December 12, 2025, including boxer Odalys Corzo Álamo, as part of the Estímulos Formativos al Talento Deportivo program. El Sol de Hermosillo reported that Corzo Álamo was among those receiving assistance.
Corzo Álamo, 18, is preparing for her professional boxing debut on December 12th at the “Sergio Maldonado Cota” gymnasium, facing Cecilia Mendoza from Oaxaca. She began boxing after experiencing bullying, finding the sport to be a disciplined and challenging outlet. The governor also announced a commitment to establish a fund of 2 billion pesos for scholarships and educational credit before leaving office.
Increased Security Measures in Tlaxcala
The decision by the Tlaxcala government to increase security patrols underscores the broader concerns about safety and stability in the region. The coordinated patrols, encompassing both ground and air operations, are intended to safeguard key transportation routes and maintain public order. This proactive approach aims to prevent any potential escalation of violence and ensure the safety of residents and travelers alike.
The situation also comes after Sonora athletes recently returned from the Juegos Deportivos Nacionales Escolares de la Educación Básica 2025 in Puebla, where they achieved first and third-place finishes. These recognitions were presented to the governor of Sonora alongside the support provided to the athletes returning from Jalisco.
The focus now shifts to ensuring the safe and timely return of all athletes from Sonora. Authorities are working diligently to coordinate travel arrangements and provide any necessary assistance. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of prioritizing athlete safety and security when organizing and participating in sporting events.
As the situation stabilizes, attention will turn to assessing the long-term impact of the violence on sporting events and travel within the affected regions. Continued vigilance and collaboration between state and local authorities will be crucial in maintaining a safe environment for athletes and the public.
