Dyson PencilWash: Compact New Hard Floor Cleaner Reviewed | TechRadar

by Sophie Lin - Technology Editor

Dyson continues to innovate in the home cleaning space, following up on the ultra-compact PencilVac vacuum with the newly unveiled PencilWash. This isn’t just another wet floor cleaner; it’s a reimagining of the category, prioritizing slimness, lightweight design, and hygienic cleaning performance. The Dyson PencilWash™ aims to tackle spills and stains with a focus on maneuverability, making it ideal for modern homes.

The new device combines Dyson’s expertise in wet cleaning with a revolutionary, pencil-thin format. It’s a departure from traditional wet-and-dry vacuums, opting for a combination of hydration, agitation, and extraction technologies to deliver a clean without relying on suction. This approach, coupled with its compact size, positions the PencilWash as a unique offering in the hard floor cleaning market.

Here are three of the most compelling features that set the Dyson PencilWash apart:

A Remarkably Compact Design

The most striking aspect of the PencilWash is its size. Unlike many bulky wet floor cleaners, the PencilWash boasts an incredibly slim profile. The motor has been shrunk down to fit inside a 1.5in (38mm) diameter handle, and the battery clips on to form the top section. Even the water tanks are integrated directly into the floorhead, resulting in a device that’s comparable in size to a standard broom. At just 4.9lbs (2.2kg), the PencilWash is similarly remarkably lightweight, making it easy to maneuver around furniture and throughout the home. Dyson claims the meticulous water distribution system allows for cleaning up to 100 square meters on a single tank fill.

A Filterless System for Hygienic Cleaning

Dyson has eliminated the filter entirely in the PencilWash’s design. By positioning the wastewater tank within the floorhead itself, the distance dirty liquid needs to travel is minimized. This eliminates the risk of blocked tubing and unpleasant odors, contributing to a more hygienic cleaning experience. The design ensures that only clean water is used to clean floors, and the extraction process keeps dirty water contained, according to Dyson’s official product page.

Exceptional Maneuverability

Building on Dyson’s reputation for maneuverable vacuums, the PencilWash is designed to navigate easily around furniture and into tight spaces. The broom-shaped handle contributes to its agility, eliminating bulk around the top section. Dyson states the PencilWash pivots smoothly with a twist of the wrist and can lay flat to just 5.9 inches (15cm), allowing it to slide effortlessly under low furniture. This feature, combined with its lightweight design, makes it a versatile tool for cleaning hard floors.

The Dyson PencilWash will be available for purchase in the US on March 17th and in the UK on February 23rd, with a list price of $349 and £299.99 respectively. Australian availability and pricing are yet to be announced.

As Dyson continues to push the boundaries of home cleaning technology, the PencilWash represents a significant step forward in convenience and hygiene. The combination of its slim design, filterless system, and exceptional maneuverability positions it as a compelling option for those seeking a modern and efficient solution for hard floor care. The next step will be to see how it performs in real-world testing and how it stacks up against existing wet floor cleaners.
