Biarritz experienced unseasonably warm temperatures on Tuesday, reaching 27 degrees Celsius (80.6 degrees Fahrenheit), according to Météo France. The mild weather, a stark contrast to recent weeks of storms, has drawn residents and tourists alike to the Basque coastline.
The unusually high temperatures are significantly above the average for February in Biarritz, which typically sees temperatures around 13 degrees Celsius (55.4 degrees Fahrenheit), Météo France reported. Socoa recorded 26 degrees Celsius (78.8 degrees Fahrenheit), while Espelette reached 24 degrees Celsius (75.2 degrees Fahrenheit).
The warm spell comes after a period of inclement weather in the region, including two consecutive storms. Locals are enjoying the respite. “The good weather does us a lot of good because we get to see each other with friends,” said a resident of Ciboure. “I thought I was going to rust. It was depressing, I needed sunshine,” remarked a visitor at Chambre d’Amour, enjoying a soda.
The influx of pleasant weather has as well boosted activity in coastal areas, with tourists taking advantage of the sunshine. “People are outside, on bikes or on foot, with strollers, it’s great,” observed a local resident. The La Chaîne Météo reports that no weather alerts are currently in effect for the region.
According to La Chaîne Météo, tonight in Biarritz will be partly cloudy, becoming clearer as the night progresses, with temperatures ranging from 15 to 23 degrees Celsius (59 to 73.4 degrees Fahrenheit). The pollen count is very high, particularly for alder, cypress, ash, and hazel, with a 5/5 rating. Air quality is rated as moderate, with a pollution index of 2/6.
Météo France’s radar and satellite imagery show clear conditions over the region. The pressure at sea level in Biarritz was 1014 hectopascals as of 3:00 PM local time on Tuesday. The next update from La Chaîne Météo is scheduled for 11:45 PM local time.
