The Korea Institute for Economic Policy (KIEP) has released a report analyzing the current state of global industrial policies focused on advanced technology sectors. The study comes as governments worldwide increasingly prioritize the development and security of supply chains for critical technologies.
According to KIEP, the Indian government is actively fostering its advanced strategic industries. The COVID-19 pandemic and a growing trend toward national self-reliance in the 2020s prompted India to reassess the importance of these sectors. This push is occurring alongside ongoing border disputes with China, leading to a desire to reduce reliance on Chinese manufacturing and technology, according to the report.
KIEP’s research also highlights the rising strategic value of the Global South, noting This proves not a new concept, but rather builds on previous terminology like the Third World or developing nations. The report, published February 2, 2026, points to the political, diplomatic, and security significance of this region.
Recent KIEP publications demonstrate a focus on global economic shifts and their implications for South Korea. On January 20, 2026, a policy research briefing examined the changing global order and a new Northern Strategy. Another report, released January 19, 2026, analyzed the economic impact of U.S. Foreign economic policy and provided forward-looking projections.
A December 29, 2023 report from KIEP, authored by Choi Won-seok, Han Hyung-min, Jo Seong-hoon, Hong Jin-hee, Yoon Hyung-jun, and Cha Jeong-mi, examined changes in the global economic security environment and corresponding strategies for South Korea. KIEP’s 2025 business plan outlined a focus on policy research to address structural shifts in the world economy and facilitate strategic international cooperation.
The institute’s work on global economic security comes as governments grapple with supply chain vulnerabilities and geopolitical competition. KIEP has not yet publicly announced any specific policy recommendations stemming from its latest report on advanced technology industrial policies.
