The allure of a quick “detox” – often marketed through vibrant social media posts promising to flush toxins and reset your system – is largely a myth, according to medical experts. From beetroot shots to kale smoothies, these popular cleanses are often more about marketing than genuine health benefits and can even pose risks, particularly for individuals with underlying health conditions.

Hyderabad-based neurologist Dr. Sudhir Kumar, trained at CMC Vellore, is among those sounding the alarm. He explains that the body is already equipped with a highly efficient detoxification system centered around the liver and kidneys. These organs work continuously to neutralize and eliminate waste products, rendering expensive and trendy “detox” juices largely unnecessary.

“Your body already has a sophisticated detox system built in,” Dr. Kumar emphasizes. “These juices don’t enhance this process, and in some cases, could even be harmful.”

How Your Body Naturally Detoxifies

The liver plays a crucial role in transforming harmful substances – including drugs, alcohol, hormones, and metabolic waste – into forms the body can excrete. Simultaneously, the kidneys filter approximately 180 litres of blood daily, maintaining electrolyte balance and removing toxins. If these organs are functioning properly, Dr. Kumar asserts, additional juices offer no added benefit.

However, for individuals with compromised kidney function, certain ingredients commonly found in detox juices can be particularly dangerous. According to Dr. Kumar, beetroot, tomato, and bottle gourd juice can cause dangerous spikes in potassium levels in those with kidney disease. Oxalate-rich drinks like beetroot or spinach juice can exacerbate kidney stone formation.

The risks extend beyond kidney health. Juicing removes essential fiber, which can lead to rapid spikes in blood sugar levels, posing a concern for individuals with diabetes. There is currently no scientific evidence to support claims that vegetable juices can reverse fatty liver or fibrosis, and extreme fluid-only detox regimens can even dilute sodium levels, leading to a potentially dangerous condition called hyponatremia.

The Real Path to Supporting Your Body’s Detox System

Dr. Kumar stresses that the perceived benefits of detox juices often stem from indirect effects – such as reduced intake of processed foods, increased hydration, and overall calorie reduction – rather than any inherent “detoxifying” properties. True health, he argues, is built on a foundation of sustainable, evidence-based habits.

These habits include a balanced diet rich in whole fruits and vegetables, adequate hydration, regular physical activity, sufficient sleep, and proactive management of existing health conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. Moderation with alcohol consumption and avoidance of extreme cleanses are similarly crucial for optimal organ function.

“The body is a self-regulating biochemical system, not a clogged pipe that needs flushing,” Dr. Kumar explains. He cautions that the marketing of detox products often relies on quick fixes and dramatic claims, diverting attention from the consistent, long-term lifestyle changes that truly promote well-being.

Before embracing the latest wellness trend promoted by social media influencers, it’s essential to critically evaluate the scientific evidence and consider potential risks, especially if you have pre-existing medical conditions.
