Zemke Wins Stage 5 of Tour du Rwanda in Mass Sprint | CyclingNews

Rubavu, Rwanda – In a thrilling sprint finish, 20-year-old Jermaine Zemke of the REMBE Rad-net team secured his first professional victory at the Tour du Rwanda, winning stage 5 in Rubavu. Zemke outpaced a competitive field, including Itamar Einhorn (NSN Development Team) and Henok Mulubrhan (Eritrea), in a fast-paced 82-kilometer stage that showcased a flurry of attacks before culminating in a mass sprint.

The stage was characterized by early breakaway attempts, with Patrick Byukusenge of Team Rwanda holding a lead for eight kilometers before being reeled in with 22 kilometers remaining. A subsequent move by Jurgen Zomermaand (Development Team Picnic PostNL) also proved unsustainable, as the NSN Development Team aggressively controlled the pace, setting up their sprinter, Einhorn, for the final kilometer. However, Zemke proved to be the fastest, capitalizing on a strategic position heading into the final corners.

“I knew there were two corners right before the finish and it was really important to be in the front,” Zemke told organizers after the race, as reported by Cyclingnews. “I thought maybe if I can go in the top five, around this corner would be nice. And then I went around the corner in first, which was incredible.” He continued, describing the final moments, “In the final straight, which was like 100 meters only, I thought, ‘Oh, this could be a really good result. Maybe I’m gonna do a top three.’ And then I glance right, I look left, nobody passed me. And that’s the moment I knew I won. It’s incredible.”

Zemke’s victory marks a significant milestone in his young career, demonstrating the potential of the German rider. His teammate, Johannes Adamietz, also had a strong showing, finishing ninth on the stage and maintaining his second-place position in the general classification, 2:02 behind the race leader.

Moritz Kretschy of the NSN Development Team continues to lead the overall standings in the Tour du Rwanda, having navigated the stage safely within the main group. Amaniel Desta remains in third place, 2:18 behind Kretschy. The NSN Development Team, a UCI WorldTeam and UCI Continental Team, has been a prominent force throughout the race, showcasing their strength in both stage wins and overall contention.
