Grado Signature S550 Review: Half the Price of the S750?

Grado Labs has just unveiled the Signature S550, a new addition to its acclaimed Signature Line of open-back headphones. Priced at $995, the S550 offers a more approachable entry point into the Grado sound, while still delivering the warmth, clarity, and detail audiophiles have come to expect from the brand. This new release is particularly captivating as it utilizes the same 50mm S2 dynamic driver found in the higher-finish, $1,695 Signature S750, launched in October 2025 (Grado Labs).

For those seeking a more relaxed listening experience without sacrificing detail, the S550 appears to be a compelling option. Grado describes the new headphones as being “designed for listeners seeking warmth, openness, and clarity without fatigue,” promising a presentation that preserves the brand’s signature speed, and immediacy. The S550 aims to strike a balance between technical performance and musical engagement, making it an attractive choice for a wider range of listeners.

The core of the S550’s sound is the 50mm S2 dynamic driver, optimized for its all-wood enclosure. Grado engineers focused on maximizing the interaction between the driver and the housing’s acoustic properties, resulting in a warmer and more forgiving sound signature. This approach builds on Grado’s long-standing tradition of using wood as an acoustic material, with previous models like the Sivga Oriole, FiiO FT1, and Audio-Technica ATH-AWKG demonstrating the benefits of wood in headphone construction (The Absolute Sound).

Brazilian Walnut and Refined Design

Visually, the Signature S550 stands out with its housings crafted entirely from Brazilian Walnut. Each housing is individually made, ensuring that no two pairs are exactly alike. Beyond aesthetics, the walnut contributes to the headphone’s tonal characteristics and structural stability. The S550 too features Grado’s new Silver detachable cable, designed to be lighter, softer, and more flexible than previous iterations.

Connectivity is handled via a 4-pin balanced mini XLR connection, compatible with Grado’s expanding ecosystem of detachable cables. The included cable terminates in a 3.5mm mini plug, with a 6.3mm adapter provided for compatibility with a wider range of audio equipment (Grado Labs). Comfort is addressed with Grado’s new B cushions, while maintaining compatibility with the full range of Grado cushions for a customized fit.

Signature Line Refinements

The S550 incorporates elements from Grado’s Signature Line, including the Signature headband assembly with a flexible metal support and a narrower leather headband strap, as seen on the S750. Additional refinements include engraved metal gimbals, stainless-steel height rods, reinforced junction blocks, and controlled housing rotation. These design choices contribute to both the durability and the overall listening experience.

Grado’s Signature Line now comprises four models: the HP100 SE, S950, S750, and the newly released S550 (Grado Labs). The S550 is positioned as a more accessible option within the line, offering a taste of the Signature experience at a lower price point.

The Grado Signature S550 is slated for release later in March, with an MSRP of $995 in the US and £995 in the UK (approximately AU$1,880 based on current exchange rates). The headphones will be available for demonstration at CanJam NYC on March 7th & 8th (The Absolute Sound).

As Grado continues to refine its Signature Line, the S550 represents a compelling option for audiophiles seeking a balance of performance, comfort, and value. The combination of a proven driver, refined design, and accessible price point positions the S550 as a strong contender in the open-back headphone market.

The release of the S550 signals Grado’s continued commitment to innovation and its dedication to delivering a unique listening experience. The coming weeks will be crucial as early reviews and user feedback begin to emerge, providing a clearer picture of the S550’s performance and its place within the broader audiophile landscape.
