Bologna is rolling out a novel approach to preventative healthcare with the launch of “Salute in Sintesi” (Health in Synthesis), a project designed to provide residents with quick, personalized assessments of their overall wellbeing. The initiative, a collaboration between the Azienda USL di Bologna (Bologna’s local health authority) and the Comune di Bologna (Bologna municipality), aims to make health screenings more accessible and actionable for citizens.
At the heart of “Salute in Sintesi” is the Health Pod – Capsula della Salute, a technologically advanced structure currently located at DumBO, via Casarini 19. This innovative pod offers a comprehensive health evaluation in a matter of minutes, utilizing a range of sensors and digital tools to gather key physiological data. The project prioritizes residents of the Porto Saragozza and Navile neighborhoods, though it is open to all adults.
The Health Pod provides a rapid assessment of vital signs, including blood pressure, heart rate, body temperature, and oxygen saturation. Beyond these clinical measurements, the pod also evaluates lifestyle factors such as stress levels, sleep quality, physical activity, and dietary habits through intuitive digital questionnaires. All collected information is processed in real-time and stored securely, adhering to privacy regulations.
A Personalized “Snapshot” of Health
Following the assessment, participants receive a personalized summary document – a “photograph” of their current health status. This report isn’t intended as a diagnosis, but rather as a starting point for informed decision-making regarding lifestyle improvements. The initiative connects individuals with a range of free resources offered by the Azienda USL di Bologna, including tailored exercise programs, nutritional counseling, smoking cessation support, and mental wellbeing initiatives. Interventions for pelvic floor rehabilitation are also available.
The project was presented on March 2nd by Anna Maria Petrini, Director General of the Azienda USL di Bologna, Maria Cristina Zambon, representing the Comune di Bologna’s Welfare Department, Paolo Pandolfi, Director of the Department of Public Health, and Gerardo Astorino, from the Health Promotion Program of the Azienda USL di Bologna. According to Paolo Pandolfi, the goal is to “expand health opportunities within the community, facilitating access to innovative, simple, and easily usable tools.”
High Demand and Future Expansion
Demand for the Health Pod has been significant. Appointments for the first five months of operation are currently fully booked, demonstrating a strong public interest in preventative health measures. The Azienda USL di Bologna has indicated that additional appointments will be made available in the future. The Capsula della Salute will remain at DumBO until December 2026, after which it will be deployed to other locations throughout Bologna and the surrounding province.
“Salute in Sintesi” is funded by the Ministry of Health as part of the National Complementary Plan to the PNRR (National Recovery and Resilience Plan) – specifically the “Health, Environment, Biodiversity and Climate” program. An investment of €60,000 was allocated for the acquisition of the Health Pod itself, representing a concrete step towards an innovative and participatory model of health promotion.
A Collaborative Effort
The success of “Salute in Sintesi” relies on a network of partnerships. In addition to the Azienda USL di Bologna and the Comune di Bologna, the project involves Eden Park Zone, Onconauti APS (in collaboration with ACLI), UISP Bologna APS, and Cittadinanzattiva Emilia Romagna APS. These organizations from the Third Sector contribute to the project’s outreach and implementation.
The initiative underscores a growing emphasis on proactive health management and personalized wellness strategies. By offering a quick, accessible, and comprehensive health assessment, “Salute in Sintesi” empowers Bologna residents to take control of their wellbeing and make informed choices about their health.
Looking ahead, the expansion of the Health Pod to various locations throughout the Bologna province will be a key development to watch. The project’s success could serve as a model for other cities seeking to implement similar preventative healthcare initiatives.
