Crimson Desert: Pearl Abyss on Avoiding Hype & the Long Road to Release

Pearl Abyss is deliberately tempering expectations for its upcoming open-world action-adventure game, Crimson Desert, scheduled for release on March 19, 2026, a strategy driven by lessons learned from its previous title, Black Desert Online, and a desire to avoid overpromising, according to company officials.

The studio’s cautious approach was revealed during a recent media event, where Will Powers, Director of Marketing and PR at Pearl Abyss, discussed the challenges of generating excitement without setting unrealistic expectations. “We need to find the balance between creating awareness and avoiding over-promise,” Powers said. “We don’t desire to disappoint anyone at launch by having expectations so high it feels like a second coming.”

The pressure to deliver is amplified by the success of Black Desert Online, which has amassed over 55 million global accounts. While Crimson Desert is now a standalone title, the legacy of its predecessor looms large, both internally, and externally.

Powers acknowledged that announcing Crimson Desert in 2019 was premature. “We are, in a way, victims of ourselves. We announced the game too early,” he stated. He explained that the game has undergone significant changes over the years, and the development process has yielded technical advancements applicable beyond a single title. This lengthy period between announcement and release has likewise created a degree of mystique, but also skepticism among potential players.

Originally conceived as a prequel to Black Desert Online, Crimson Desert evolved into its own single-player experience. Pearl Abyss opted to embrace this shift, recognizing that forcing the project back into its original framework would stifle its potential. While retaining a shared aesthetic and certain design elements with the Black Desert IP, the game now aims for a distinct identity.

The company is actively positioning Crimson Desert as an open-world action-adventure game, rather than a traditional role-playing game, a move intended to manage player expectations. Powers explained that the term “RPG” often evokes specific expectations regarding character builds, loot systems, and overall complexity. By emphasizing action and exploration, Pearl Abyss hopes to avoid misaligned expectations.

The game draws inspiration from established open-world titles such as The Legend of Zelda, The Witcher, Dragon’s Dogma, and Assassin’s Creed, but Pearl Abyss aims to forge its own path. Powers indicated that, after extensive playtesting and feedback, the studio is moving beyond direct comparisons to existing games, believing that Crimson Desert’s combination of systems and ideas is unique.

A key design goal is to create a game that is accessible in shorter play sessions. Players should be able to achieve meaningful progress within an hour, whether by gathering resources, exploring a region, or completing a self-directed task. This approach aims to appeal to players who enjoy open-world games but may not have extensive blocks of time to dedicate to them.

Despite being a single-player game, Pearl Abyss intends to foster a sense of community through shared experiences. Internal playtests have revealed a phenomenon where players share discoveries and create a sense of “offline-coop,” similar to the post-game discussions and shared experiences common in games like Fallout 4. The studio hopes this will encourage players to share their adventures and discoveries with others.
