Jayson Tatum Return: Celtics Star Expected to Debut vs. Mavericks

by Luis Mendoza - Sport Editor

The Boston Celtics are on the verge of welcoming back a key player as All-Star forward Jayson Tatum is expected to make his season debut Friday night against the Dallas Mavericks at TD Garden. After months of rehabilitation following an Achilles tendon injury sustained in May, Tatum has been upgraded to questionable for the 7 p.m. ET matchup, signaling a significant step toward his return to the court.

The potential return of Tatum, who underwent surgery on May 13, marks a pivotal moment for the Celtics, currently second in the Eastern Conference with a record of 41-21. His absence has been keenly felt, but indications are he’s ready to contribute as Boston navigates the final 20 games of the regular season, 11 of which will be played at home.

Reports indicate Tatum is feeling prepared to play and will inform the team of his final decision within the next day, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania. This comes after Tatum practiced with the Celtics’ NBA G League affiliate in early February, accelerating his recovery timeline to roughly 298 days since the surgery.

This marks the first time this season Tatum hasn’t been listed as sidelined, a testament to the progress he’s made both physically and mentally – criteria emphasized by Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens as essential for his return.

Tatum’s Road to Recovery

Tatum’s injury occurred during Game 4 of the Eastern Conference semifinals against the New York Knicks, abruptly ending the Celtics’ championship aspirations. He swiftly opted for surgery the following day, initiating a rehabilitation process that typically spans nine to 12 months. His anticipated return after 298 days is comparable to the recovery timeline of Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer Dominique Wilkins, who returned after 283 days following his own Achilles tendon rupture in 1992, going on to average 29.9 points per game in 71 regular-season games.

The forward’s dedication to his recovery was recently chronicled in the documentary “The Quiet Operate,” offering a glimpse into his rigorous rehab process. Tatum himself expressed a desire to return at TD Garden, a wish that appears poised to turn into reality.

Tatum, who signed a five-year, $314 million contract extension in 2024, turned 28 on Tuesday. He has been mindful of not disrupting the Celtics’ current momentum, acknowledging the team’s success in his absence. “I’m just hyper aware of what’s going on,” Tatum said in a recent interview. “I think it would just stem from that. Obviously, I know what I bring to the table and bring to the team. But I’m similarly aware that these guys have been playing extremely well.”

Last season, Tatum averaged 26.8 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 6 assists over 72 games. His return provides a significant boost to a Celtics team already positioned for a deep playoff run.

What’s Next for the Celtics?

The Celtics will continue to evaluate Tatum’s readiness in the lead-up to Friday’s game against the Mavericks. His final decision will be based on how he feels physically and his confidence in rejoining the lineup. Regardless of his availability, the Celtics will look to maintain their strong position in the Eastern Conference as they approach the postseason.
