The Lombardy Region of Italy is bolstering its commitment to supporting individuals undergoing cancer treatment with an expanded financial aid program. Building on existing measures, the initiative now offers assistance not only for the cost of wigs and prostheses related to chemotherapy or radiotherapy-induced alopecia, but also for aesthetic treatments addressing skin side effects from cancer therapies. This expanded support, detailed in a recent regional decree (D.d.u.o n. 2060 of February 26, 2026), aims to improve the quality of life and promote social inclusion for those navigating the challenges of cancer treatment.
This program recognizes the significant physical and emotional toll cancer treatment can capture on patients. Beyond the medical aspects, therapies like chemotherapy and radiotherapy often lead to hair loss and skin damage, impacting self-esteem and overall well-being. The Lombardy Region’s expanded financial aid seeks to alleviate some of these burdens, providing tangible support for patients to manage these visible side effects and maintain a sense of normalcy during a difficult time. The initiative builds upon previous measures established in 2019 and 2022 (D.G.R. N. 1829/2019 and n. 7099/2022), demonstrating a continued dedication to patient care.
Financial Assistance Details
Residents of Lombardy currently undergoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy that results in alopecia or significant skin side effects are eligible to apply for the aid. The program offers three types of financial contributions: €250 for a wig, €400 for a prosthetic hairpiece, and €70 for aesthetic oncology treatments. These treatments include dermopigmentation of eyebrows, facial treatments, hand treatments, and foot treatments – excluding massage therapy. The contribution amounts are capped at the actual cost of the purchase or treatment if those costs are lower than the maximum amounts offered. For example, if a wig costs €200, the patient will receive a contribution of €200.
Applicants can submit their requests directly through the regional “Bandi e Servizi” platform or through accredited Third Sector organizations, which can facilitate the provision of wigs directly to those in need. It’s important to note that individuals cannot receive both a direct contribution for a wig and a wig provided by a Third Sector organization. A single application for aesthetic oncology treatments can be submitted annually, either independently or in addition to a request for wig or prosthetic coverage. Only one application can be submitted per year, subject to available funding.
Eligibility and Application Process
To apply, individuals must provide certification from their treating specialist confirming that the alopecia or skin damage is a direct consequence of chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Documentation, such as invoices or receipts, proving the purchase of a wig, prosthetic, or aesthetic treatment is also required. If someone is applying on behalf of a minor or incapacitated individual, they must include an “Authorization for the Use of Personal Data” form (Allegato A4). Applications can be submitted by the individual receiving the benefit, a parent or legal guardian, or another authorized representative.
The regional health authority (ATS) will process applications and disburse funds within 30 days of approval. For those purchasing items directly, the contribution will be paid to the applicant. Technical assistance with the online application process is available via email at [email protected] or by calling the toll-free number 800.131.151, Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM. Further information regarding the program and application requirements can be found by emailing [email protected] or visiting the regional “Bandi e Servizi” platform. Individuals can also contact their local ATS for assistance.
This initiative represents a significant step in recognizing the holistic needs of cancer patients in Lombardy, extending support beyond medical treatment to address the emotional and psychological impacts of the disease and its therapies. As the program rolls out, ongoing monitoring and evaluation will be crucial to ensure its effectiveness and accessibility for all eligible residents. The Lombardy Region’s commitment to this program underscores a growing awareness of the importance of comprehensive cancer care.
