Formula E Celebrates International Women’s Day & Champions Gender Equality

by Luis Mendoza - Sport Editor

Formula E is accelerating its commitment to gender equality, moving beyond symbolic gestures to implement tangible changes aimed at increasing female participation and breaking down systemic barriers within motorsport. The series isn’t simply celebrating women on International Women’s Day; it’s actively working to dismantle inequalities and create lasting opportunities, according to the championship’s leadership.

This dedication manifests in several key initiatives, including expanded testing programs, investment in grassroots development, and policy changes designed to support female drivers and team members. The championship’s efforts are gaining momentum as it prepares for the 2025/26 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship season and beyond, with a focus on creating a more inclusive and diverse environment.

A cornerstone of this strategy has been the delivery of two all-women’s tests, providing 21 female drivers with the opportunity to pilot the GEN3 Evo race car, capable of accelerating from 0-60mph in just 1.82 seconds. This initiative has already yielded significant results, with six participants securing rookie or official development roles and four transitioning into permanent team positions – demonstrating a clear pathway for women into the championship.

Empowering the Next Generation

Formula E’s commitment extends to nurturing young talent through the FIA Girls on Track program. The championship is committed to delivering this program in every race market during the 2025/26 season, having already impacted over 6000 young women since its inception. These events offer up to 120 young women immersive STEM workshops and insights into the diverse career paths available within motorsport, aiming to inspire the next generation of female engineers, mechanics, and drivers.

Recognizing the challenges faced by female athletes and team members in balancing career and family, Formula E and the FIA have announced that maternity and paternity pay will now be excluded from the cost cap, effective ahead of the 2025/26 season. This decision reinforces their commitment to inclusivity and supports a more equitable environment for all participants.

Beyond driver development, Formula E is actively working with teams and partners to expand opportunities for women in technical roles, offering support in areas such as engineering, simulator time, and driver coaching. The series is also engaging with leading women in sport to learn from their experiences and accelerate diversity and inclusion efforts.

Technological Advancements and Future Plans

Looking ahead, Formula E and the FIA are planning to integrate technology into their cars, including power steering for the GEN4 car (scheduled for the 2026/27 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship season), designed to aid performance and driveability for all drivers, regardless of gender. This demonstrates a proactive approach to addressing potential physical differences and ensuring a level playing field.

Formula E is collaborating with diverse and women-led organizations to identify and address key barriers preventing women and girls from entering motorsport at all levels. This collaborative approach aims to create a more inclusive and welcoming environment for aspiring female professionals.

Cara Pelchen, VP Sporting at Formula E, emphasized the series’ long-term vision, stating: “Our commitment at Formula E moves far beyond celebrating women on a single day; it’s about creating lasting opportunities and breaking down the barriers that have historically limited participation in motorsport. Through initiatives like our Women’s Tests and the FIA Girls on Track programme, we are not only giving talented women drivers and young women the platform to excel but also inspiring the next generation to see motorsport as a safe space where they belong.”

Formula E’s multifaceted approach to gender equality signals a genuine commitment to creating a more inclusive and diverse future for motorsport. As the series continues to evolve, these initiatives are poised to have a lasting impact on the sport, paving the way for greater female representation both on and off the track.

The championship’s ongoing efforts will be closely watched as it prepares for the 2025/26 season, and beyond. Fans can find more information about the upcoming race calendar, broadcast options, and ticket availability on the official Formula E website.
