First Outdoor Beers of the Year as Spring Arrives in Norway

Oslo Embraces Early Spring with First “Utepils” of the Year

Oslo residents are seizing the opportunity to enjoy the first signs of spring, with many opting to partake in the Norwegian tradition of “utepils” – an outdoor beer – as warmer temperatures arrive. The mild weather is drawing people to outdoor seating areas, eager to shed the winter doldrums and embrace the sunshine.

The phenomenon isn’t limited to locals, although. Tourists are also joining in the seasonal celebration, experiencing a uniquely Norwegian custom. Thomas Taylor (26), Elias Ellis (27), and Matt Lester (27) from Devon, England, arrived in Norway yesterday and quickly embraced the concept. “I like it. For an incredible concept,” said Ellis, although Taylor added, “Beer just makes everything better.”

For many, the first “utepils” signifies a turning point after a long winter. “It feels almost like hibernation is over as soon as the sun comes out,” laughed Emma Lundsveen (21), enjoying a drink with her friend Synne Paulsberg (21). The pair, both students in Oslo, decided to take advantage of the sunny weather. “We start early! We have to seize the chance,” Lundsveen stated.

Paulsberg echoed the sentiment, saying, “It might be a little early, but as long as the sun is shining, I reckon it’s allowed. You can’t sit inside then, it’s just not the same.”
