Tom Pidcock Targets Strade Bianche Win Against Stronger Field

by Luis Mendoza - Sport Editor

Siena, Italy – Tom Pidcock arrives at the 2026 Strade Bianche prepared for a rematch with Tadej Pogačar, but similarly acknowledging a potentially tougher challenge from a deeper field of contenders. The British rider, a former winner of the prestigious Italian race, is aiming to once again challenge for the top spot on Saturday, building on a strong foundation of training and recent success.

Pidcock, now in his second season with Pinarello-Q36.5, appears to be benefiting from the team’s continued development. A 25-day training camp at altitude in Chile in February served as crucial preparation for the Classics season. While early races and last week’s Omloop het Nieuwsblad presented frustrations, a stage win at the Ruta del Sol provided a significant confidence boost heading into Strade Bianche, a race Pidcock clearly relishes.

“I’m always good here just because it’s one of my favourite races, I love the race so much, so I desire to perform,” Pidcock stated on the eve of the race in Siena. He recognizes the difficulty of securing a victory, but remains focused on a competitive showing. “Obviously, we want to try and win, but we obviously know how hard that’s going to be, how ambitious that is. If I can battle with Tadej for a little or for a long time, that’s a positive. If I end up on the podium, that’d be a good result.”

The 2025 edition saw Pogačar emerge victorious, with Pidcock finishing as the runner-up. The long, challenging gravel sectors of the Strade Bianche course are expected to once again be a key battleground between the two riders. Pidcock anticipates closely monitoring Pogačar’s moves, particularly on those crucial stretches of unpaved roads.

Stronger Competition Expected in 2026

Beyond Pogačar, Pidcock believes the overall strength of the field has increased compared to last year. He specifically highlighted the rising talent of Isaac Del Toro and Paul Seixas as riders to watch. “I reckon the field is perhaps a little bit stronger than last year,” Pidcock noted. Del Toro’s performance since the 2025 Giro d’Italia has been particularly impressive, while Seixas is demonstrating significant potential early in the season.

Pidcock also anticipates strategic maneuvering from teams Decathlon and UAE Team Emirates. “We’ll spot how Decathlon play it, while we know how UAE will play it. They don’t need to be too secretive about their tactics,” he said, acknowledging the well-established strengths of both squads. UAE Team Emirates, of course, is Pogačar’s team.

Pinarello-Q36.5’s Continued Development

The Pinarello-Q36.5 team has shown marked improvement since Pidcock joined their ranks. The extended altitude training camp in Chile underscores the team’s commitment to preparing for the demands of the Spring Classics. This focused preparation is intended to give Pidcock and his teammates a competitive edge in the grueling one-day races.

Pidcock’s victory at the Ruta del Sol demonstrates his current form and ability to perform under pressure. The stage win served as a valuable morale booster after a challenging start to the season and suggests he is peaking at the right time for Strade Bianche.

The Strade Bianche is known for its unique course, featuring a significant amount of gravel roads that test riders’ bike handling skills and endurance. The race’s challenging terrain and unpredictable weather conditions often lead to dramatic racing and unexpected outcomes.

As Pidcock prepares for Saturday’s race, he remains focused on his own performance and the opportunity to challenge for the win. While acknowledging the strength of his rivals, he is confident in his ability to compete at the highest level and deliver a strong result.

The 2026 Strade Bianche promises to be a thrilling contest, with Pidcock and Pogačar poised to once again lead the charge. The race will not only test the physical limits of the riders but also their tactical acumen and ability to adapt to the ever-changing conditions. Following Strade Bianche, both riders are expected to continue their campaigns through the Spring Classics, with Milan-San Remo and the Tour of Flanders looming on the horizon.
