Amidst the escalating conflict, Iran’s Assembly of Experts, the body responsible for selecting the Supreme Leader, is reportedly nearing a consensus on a successor to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in the initial Israeli strikes on February 28, 2026, according to Stanford University’s Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies. While the identity of the potential successor remains undisclosed, Israel’s military has warned it will “pursue every successor and every person who seeks to appoint a successor,” signaling a continued effort to destabilize the Iranian regime. Prime Minister Netanyahu stated in a press conference his goal is to “destabilize the regime and enable change.”
Continued Strikes in Lebanon and Regional Tensions
The conflict is also intensifying in Lebanon, where the Israeli military targeted a hotel in central Beirut on Sunday, killing at least four people, according to Lebanese health officials. This marks the first time the heart of the Lebanese capital has been directly struck since the beginning of the conflict. The strikes are part of an ongoing campaign against Hezbollah, the Iran-backed militant group, and have resulted in nearly 300 deaths and tens of thousands of displaced people, according to the Lebanese government.
