Surfer & Dog’s Close Call with Lemon Sharks in Brazil | Surfer.com

by Luis Mendoza - Sport Editor

A dramatic scene unfolded at Praia da Conceição on Fernando de Noronha island in Brazil, as a surfer had a close encounter with lemon sharks while in the lineup. The incident, captured on video, shows the sharks thrashing in the shallow waters as surfer Júnior Lagosta quickly paddled to shore. Adding a surreal twist to the situation, a dog appeared unfazed by the sharks and attempted to enter the water.

The footage, circulating widely on social media, highlights the potential for unexpected wildlife encounters in popular surfing locations. According to a translation of the video caption, a lemon shark was already circling near the water’s edge when Lagosta came off a wave, seemingly unaware of the marine predators nearby. Soon after, additional sharks were observed close to the beach, drawing the attention of onlookers.

This wasn’t Lagosta’s first experience with sharks in the waters off Fernando de Noronha. He recounted a previous incident from approximately six years ago, where he fell into a school of sardines while surfing at Conceição and found himself surrounded by two sharks. He explained that this experience inspired a shark-like face tattoo on his chest, viewing it as “a symbol of respect for nature.” He added, “It’s a natural thing. After all, we’re invading his house, right? But it’s a unique experience.”

Ontem no fim de tarde, na Praia da Conceição, em Fernando de Noronha Um tubarão-limão já circulava na beira da água quando o surfista Júnior Lagosta saiu de uma onda e passou por ali sem perceber.

Lemon sharks are commonly found in the Atlantic Ocean, ranging from New Jersey to southern Brazil. While they are large predatory species, attacks on humans are rare. According to the International Shark Attack File, there have been only 10 unprovoked attacks by lemon sharks, all occurring in Florida and the Caribbean, and no fatal attacks attributed to the species.

Understanding Lemon Shark Behavior

The presence of lemon sharks in shallow waters, as seen in the video, isn’t necessarily indicative of aggressive behavior. Lemon sharks often frequent coastal areas, including those near swimmers, surfers, and divers, while foraging for food. The sharks’ appearance near the shore may have been linked to the presence of a school of sardines, as Lagosta experienced in his previous encounter. These sharks are known to feed on bony fish, as well as crustaceans and other marine life.

Previous Shark Encounters and Local Awareness

The incident at Praia da Conceição follows a similar event reported in February 2025, also involving Júnior Lagosta and lemon sharks at the same location. The AOS Mídia reported on the earlier incident, further highlighting the potential for shark encounters in the area. The local community and visitors to Fernando de Noronha are generally aware of the presence of sharks and take precautions accordingly.

The curious reaction of the dog in the video underscores the unpredictable nature of animal behavior. While the sharks posed a potential threat to Lagosta, the dog appeared oblivious to the danger, attempting to approach the marine predators. This contrast highlights the different perceptions of risk among various species.

As the surfing season continues in Brazil, and with lemon sharks being a common sight in the Atlantic, it’s crucial for surfers and beachgoers to remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings. While attacks remain rare, respecting the marine environment and understanding the behavior of these powerful predators is essential for ensuring safety. The incident serves as a reminder that sharing the ocean means coexisting with its diverse inhabitants, including those with a formidable reputation.

What comes next will likely involve continued monitoring of shark activity around Fernando de Noronha and ongoing efforts to educate both locals and tourists about safe practices in the water. Share your thoughts on this incredible encounter in the comments below.
