Dancing with the Stars: Tolu Makay on Confidence & New Life

Singer Tolü Makay says her experience on Dancing with the Stars has sparked a creative resurgence and newfound confidence, transforming the competition into something far beyond just learning to dance. As she prepares for this Sunday’s semi-final, Makay reflects on a journey that began with “zero” dance experience and has blossomed into a period of self-discovery and artistic renewal.

Makay, who grew up in Tullamore, Co Offaly, initially entered the competition simply hoping to survive each week. Still, the experience has proven to be profoundly impactful, giving her what she describes as “a new life.” The singer credits her partnership with professional dancer Maciej Zięba for fostering this growth, noting their connection has “gone from strength to strength” throughout the series.

“Coming into the competition, I definitely knew that I was seeking some sort of, like, joy,” Makay explained, detailing her dancefloor adventures. “The best way I can put it is Dancing with the Stars has given me a new life,” she continued. “I feel like my creative spark has come back. In the sense of, I feel I’m much more confident in pursuing anything creatively, moving forward, instead of doubting myself.”

This newfound confidence extends to embracing challenges and pushing her boundaries. Makay stated she’s a “complete student to this whole dancing world,” and is consistently surprised by her own progress each week. This self-discovery has empowered her to dream bigger and explore untapped potential. “I feel like my creative spark has come back,” she reiterated.

Semi-Final Performances Set to Wow

This Sunday’s Dancing through the Decades show will see Makay and Zięba tackle a Paso Doble inspired by the 1980s and Guns N’ Roses’ “Welcome to the Jungle.” They will also perform a Jive to Little Richard’s “Tutti Frutti,” teaming up with eliminated pro dancer Stephen Vincent for this portion of the performance. Makay playfully admitted, “I don’t know what else they’re going to give me!”

Makay has already surpassed her initial goal of reaching Orchestra Night, a significant milestone in the competition. Her journey has been closely followed by fellow contestants and judges alike. Judge Arthur Gourounlian has even predicted that Paudie Moloney, another contestant, could win the competition despite not being the most technically skilled dancer, citing his popularity with the public, according to The Sun.

The support from her fellow competitors is also evident, with Makay herself stating she “would vote for Paudie if I could,” as reported by The Irish Independent.

A Transformative Experience

Beyond the dance floor, Makay’s participation in Dancing with the Stars has had a broader impact on her artistic outlook. She feels the show has reignited her creative drive and given her the courage to pursue new opportunities. RTÉ reports that Makay believes the experience has unlocked gifts she didn’t even know she possessed.

The semi-final lineup also includes Traitors Ireland star Paudie Moloney, Ireland AM host Eric Roberts, and Rose of Tralee winner Katelyn Cummins, all vying for a place in the final, as detailed by EVOKE. Jordan Dargan, from The Apprentice, was recently eliminated from the competition, expressing his disappointment at missing out on the final.

As Dancing with the Stars heads towards its climax, Tolü Makay’s story serves as a powerful example of the show’s ability to not only entertain but also to inspire personal and artistic growth. The competition continues to deliver captivating performances and emotional journeys, leaving audiences eagerly anticipating the crowning of this season’s glitterball champion.

The semi-final promises to be a thrilling showcase of talent, and dedication. Viewers will be watching closely to see which couples will secure their place in the final and continue their pursuit of the coveted trophy. Don’t forget to tune in this Sunday to witness the culmination of weeks of hard work and passion.
