Blaney’s Win Completes Penske’s INDYCAR-NASCAR Sweep at Phoenix: Takeaways

by Luis Mendoza - Sport Editor

Ryan Blaney delivered a crucial victory for Team Penske in the NASCAR Cup Series’ Straight Talk Wireless 500 at Phoenix Raceway on Sunday, completing a remarkable weekend for the organization. The win wasn’t just the first for Penske in the 2026 NASCAR season; it capped off a “Desert Double” sweep, with teammate Josef Newgarden winning the INDYCAR race at the same track the day before. This achievement underscores Team Penske’s unique position as the only team competing at the highest level in both NASCAR and INDYCAR.

Blaney’s triumph, secured on the one-mile oval where he likewise won the season finale in November, showcased resilience and strategic brilliance. He watched Newgarden’s INDYCAR victory on Saturday from a suite alongside team owner Roger Penske, adding to the celebratory atmosphere. “Anytime you can win for Roger, it means the world, but those INDYCAR guys position a lot of pressure on us,” Blaney said in a post-race interview. The double victory highlights the depth of talent and operational excellence within the Penske organization.

The weekend’s success extends beyond the Cup and INDYCAR wins. David Malukas secured the pole position for the INDYCAR race, while Joey Logano earned the pole for the NASCAR event, demonstrating Penske’s overall speed and competitiveness. This dominant performance at Phoenix sets a high bar for the rest of the season.

Blaney Overcomes Adversity to Claim Victory

The 2023 Cup Series champion, Ryan Blaney, faced challenges during the race, battling through two pit stops marred by loose wheels. Despite these setbacks, he demonstrated remarkable composure and skill, utilizing a strategic two-tire stop to regain track position and ultimately hold off a hard-charging Christopher Bell. “I’m proud of the whole group for sticking with it all day and cool to win here again, just a handful of months later,” Blaney stated after the race. His ability to overcome adversity proved pivotal in securing the win.

Gibbs Shows Promise Amid Scrutiny

Ty Gibbs, in his fourth full season in the Cup Series, continued to show promise with a second consecutive fourth-place finish. The 2022 O’Reilly Series champion is still seeking his first Cup Series win, but his consistent performance is turning heads. Gibbs’ performance comes amidst scrutiny related to a lawsuit filed by Joe Gibbs Racing against former competition director Chris Gabehart, where documents reportedly suggest Gibbs receives preferential treatment. Gibbs addressed the criticism directly, stating, “I certainly function as hard as anybody else no matter what anybody says and can say… I’ll let my performance on track handle it and we’ll go from there.” He reiterated this sentiment after the race, emphasizing the supportive environment within his team: “It was great. I’m finally working with people that believe in me and are supportive and are really loyal. It makes a difference, and I think that’s what it’s showing. And I have a great bunch of guys that are on my team.”

Bell Falls Short Despite Strong Run

For the third consecutive week, Christopher Bell found himself in contention for a win late in the race, only to come up short. Finishing second to Blaney, Bell acknowledged that he likely couldn’t have held off the race winner for much longer, given Blaney’s late-race strategy. “You win some, you lose some,” Bell said in a post-race interview on FS1. “This one stings, but on the positive side I’m really proud of our entire team… Just bummed whenever they get away like that.” While Bell’s consistency is encouraging, he remains winless in 2026, with Tyler Reddick having claimed the first three races of the season.

Hendrick Motorsports Faces Challenges at Phoenix

Hendrick Motorsports, traditionally a powerhouse in NASCAR, struggled at Phoenix. Kyle Larson finished third, but expressed that it wasn’t a race-winning performance. William Byron finished seventh, while Chase Elliott was involved in a wreck and finished 23rd. Anthony Alfredo, substituting for Alex Bowman who was sidelined due to vertigo, was eliminated from the race in an accident. Larson acknowledged the team’s historical difficulties at the track, stating, “It’s concerning, but we’re always really bad here at Phoenix, at least me… William has had his moments of being pretty strong, but I perceive like the rest of us three, have always been really bad.” He suggested a combination of factors, including adapting to the modern Chevrolet body and the increased horsepower (now at 750 horsepower for tracks under 1.3 miles in length), contributed to their struggles.

The NASCAR Cup Series now heads to Las Vegas, while the INDYCAR Series will race in Arlington, Texas, next weekend. Chase Briscoe, currently 33rd in the standings and 53 points behind the playoff cutoff, faces an uphill battle after a wreck at Phoenix. “Realistically, you maybe get two mulligans on the year,” Briscoe said after being evaluated at the medical center. “And we’ve used three now in the first four weeks.”

Team Penske’s strong start to the 2026 season, highlighted by the Desert Double sweep, positions them as a major contender for both NASCAR and INDYCAR championships. The team’s ability to foster collaboration and extract maximum performance from its drivers and equipment will be key to continued success as the seasons progress.
