Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the third generation CLA, arriving in all-electric versions – the CLA 250+ and CLA 350 4Matic – boasting a range of up to 792 kilometers (492 miles) under the WLTP standard. The new model represents a significant step for the automaker, being the first modern Mercedes to feature a frunk, adding 101 liters of storage space.
The CLA 250+ is powered by a 90.0 kWh gross capacity battery, offering a usable capacity of 85.0 kWh, and utilizes NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt) technology. The vehicle’s maximum power output is 200 kW (272 hp), with a torque of 335 Nm (247 lb-ft), enabling acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.7 seconds and a top speed of 210 km/h (131 mph). Fast DC charging capabilities allow for a recharge providing up to 325 kilometers of range in as little as ten minutes.
Dimensionally, the new CLA measures 4,723 mm in length, 1,855 mm in width, and 1,468 mm in height, positioning it close to the Tesla Model 3 in size – being 3 mm longer, 5 mm wider, and 27 mm taller, but with a shorter 2,790 mm wheelbase (85 mm shorter than the Tesla). Interior space has been increased, with front and rear passengers benefiting from 16 mm and 28 mm more headroom respectively, although trunk volume has decreased to 405 liters.
A key feature of the new CLA is its 800-volt electric architecture, facilitating rapid charging speeds. The base CLA version will utilize a lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery with a net capacity of 58 kWh and an energy density of 450 Wh/l. Mercedes claims this battery can be charged from 10 to 100% in 22 minutes with up to 320 kW.
The CLA also debuts Mercedes’ new MB.OS operating system, developed entirely in-house, controlling infotainment, automated driving, body & comfort, and driving & charging functions. The system integrates Google Maps for navigation and utilizes the Google Cloud’s new Automotive AI Agent. The vehicle’s aerodynamic design, achieving a drag coefficient of 0.21, contributes to its energy efficiency and extended range.
The performance-oriented CLA 350 4Matic offers 260 kW of power and is capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds, according to Mercedes.
