Fierce clashes erupted in South Kordofan, Sudan, earlier this month, with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) claiming to have seized territory as the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) retreated towards Kadugli, according to videos circulated by RSF fighters.

The fighting, reported on March 4th, underscores the escalating conflict gripping Sudan, a situation that has prompted international concern and a search for viable mediation strategies. The RSF’s claims of territorial gains have not been independently verified, but reports confirm intense fighting in the Delling, Habila, El Takma, and El Obeid areas as of March 1st.

The ongoing civil war in Sudan has exposed weaknesses in the international multilateral system, raising questions about the effectiveness of existing sanctions and mediation efforts, according to analysis published March 5th. Despite numerous attempts to disrupt the conflict, the war continues to rage.

The United States Treasury Department, on February 19th, took action by sanctioning three commanders of the RSF, citing the need to address the escalating violence and instability in the region. The sanctions, issued by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), aim to disrupt the RSF’s operations and hold individuals accountable for contributing to the conflict.

The situation in South Kordofan is particularly volatile, with both sides reportedly suffering casualties. The SAF has not yet issued a comprehensive statement regarding the RSF’s claims or the extent of their retreat, maintaining a position of limited public comment on specific battlefield developments.
